CSKA Moscow - Riga (107:78)

The defeat they suffered against Fener might motivate the Moscow team

  • Published:

Riga improved their game over the past few weeks and entered the playoff zone, but they can hardly parry the mighty Russians

The return of Andrei Kirilenko to CSKA did not go as expected. CSKA lost the Euroleague game against Fenerbahce, and by more than 3 points, which is the lead they had after the Turkish game, and are now third in the group. The very start of the match showed CSKA were not in the rhythm, as it took them almost 6 minutes to score the first basket, which allowed Fener to open the game with 10-0. However, carried by De Colo and Weems CSKA managed to get into their rhythm and catch up. We saw a very close second half in which CSKA had their chance while in the lead 67-63, but Fener answered in the right way and scored a major victory.

-A tough game, just as we expected. We started poorly on both ends of the court and it cost us. We controlled the game in the second and third period, but were not at our optimum in the key moments of the game. We lacked focus, did not shoot well, our key players had bad shooting percentages- said Itoudis after losing against his mentor, Željko Obradović.

Although the leading players in the perimeter were the most efficient, this was not their night. De Colo was their best player with 18 points (5/10), while Teodosić  (14 points and six assists, but with 2/11 shooting and four turnovers) under-performed and Weems (6/18) was utterly lost in the second half. CSKA also lost the battle under the rim, where Bjelica (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Vesely (14 points, 5 rebounds) spread mayhem. Kirilenko played just a few minutes and had one successful attack, it's only logical of Itoudis to gradually increase his play time.

- It was an even game for almost 30 minutes. In such games, if you lose the rebounding battle you lose the game, and that's what happened today. It's a pity that Nando got his fifth foul in the end, as he was our driving force today- said Kirilenko.

The situation is still not alarming, as CSKA will make it to the quarterfinal, but they currently don't hold a position that would grant them the home court advantage. They played one of their worst matches this season, but could still have won it had they played a bit better in the finish. The Euroleague is their priority right now, the VTB is just a routine appearance, but the defeat against Fener could serve as added motivation against Riga.

- We're playing against another team worthy of playoff in the VTB league, a very athletic and quick team. We had a tough game on Friday, while Riga rested, so a lot will depend on energy in this game, and it's important we match their energy in the counterattacks- said Itoudis, with only Markoishvili missing in his roster.

Riga were not listed among teams liable to enter playoff t the start of the season, but this VTB season is full of surprises. Several teams under-performed while some were pleasant surprises. Riga took advantage of the chances they got and won against direct competitors, while easily losing against top teams. Perhaps the closest they came to taking a big team's scalp was in their last match against UNICS, where they held a 17 point lead in the first half, but could not keep up such a rhythm.

- I'm frustrated by the result and our performance, as well as Fall's injury which prevented him from finishing the game. With him gone it was impossible to get rid of our problems in the paint. We've proven we can fight for victory against anyone, we just have to trust ourselves- said Mazurs.

It's been two weeks since that match. In the mean time Riga played a national league derby against Ventspils, and an away victory against a great rival only confirmed their improving form and served as a boost of confidence prior to the key battles in the VTB league. Even with Fall missing Riga utterly dominated, holding 69-47 in the last quarter, but eased off in the end, allowing the opponent to reduce the lead quite a bit.

This was their last official match, which gave them plenty of time to prepare for the rest of the season. They were soundly beaten at home by the Russians in November and it would be delusional to expect any kind of serious resistance, though they have improved since then. CSKA have the edge in all positions and can definitely follow any tempo the away team tries to impose. There are no information about Bamba Fall, without whom they'll have a much more difficult task defending under the rim.
