Palestine - India (49:89)

India looking to continue the solid performances from the Asian Cup in July

  • Published:

Palestine are a basketball dwarf even by Western Asian standards. At the regional championship in May they had a 1-5 score, beating only Yemen. This should be an easy job for India,

In a situation where people are still tallying up damages and the number of shells fired by Israel in the recent  conflict, it's had to expect a lot of reports about the Palestine basketball team. To be more precise, there is not a single one... The last entry at their official page concerns their score at the Western Asian Championship where they scored 1-5. A close defeat against Iraq,  then a somewhat harder defeat against the same opponent the next day. Syria defeated them next, and they vented their frustration on Yemen the fourth day, beating them by 21 points. They ended the championship with a decisive defeat against Jordan, who later won the title.

Unfortunately, if you're looking for further info regarding the roster, their hopes for the match, the health status and other details relevant for the preview, there just aren't any available...

Roster: Ahmed Mahdi, Ibrahim Aburahal, Jamalwiliam Abushmala, Krayem, Mousa, Salim Sakinini, Salman, Sani Sakinini, Wasim Mesk, Yaghmour, Younis, Yousef.

In India, however, basketball is on a whole new level compared to Palestine. They have been a regular participant at the Asian Championship (not to be confused with the Asian Games) since 2001. They had less than stellar success, never reaching past eighth place, which they achieved in 2001 and 2003, and in the following championships (it's a biannual competition) they came in 12th, 15th, 13th, 14th, and 11th out of 15 teams two years ago.

Of the team that played together two years ago at the Asian Championship, all the main players are still here - top scorer of the team, forward Bhriguvanshi (13.1pts, 5.9rbs), guard Grewal (11pts), forward Amjyot (10.6pts, 6.9rbs), point guard Joginder (7.3pts), forward Pratham (6.6pts), centers Amritpal (6.4pts, 5.5rbs) and Pethani (5.4pts) i forward Yadwinder (4.9rbs).

Even more importantly, this roster is identical to the one that played at the Asian Cup in July, where India won 7th place with a 3-4 score. The most notable performances there were those by Amjyot with 14.7 points and 6.9 rebounds, Bhriguvanashi with 10.6 points and 4.6 rebounds and Amritpal with 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Bhriguvanashi, Amjyot, Amritpal, Mishra and Yadwinder are the key players in India's team, and much is expected from shooters Pratham, Joginder and Grewal, who should spread out the defense in the paint with perimeter shooting in order to give Amritpal space under the rim. He is the one who should tip the balance, along with Amjyot and Pethani, as Palestine have a rather short team.

While this is a first for Palestine, India have hardly been a regular at the Asian Games either, with their last appearance dating back to 1982.

Roster: Amjyot, Amritpal, Bhriguvanshi, Brar, Grewal, Joginder, Mishra, Pari, Pethani, Pratham, Sivakumar, Yadwinder.
