Murcia improving defense, Valencia missing Dubljević

Murcia enter the new season with a new coach, one that spent years as an apprentice to great names such as Aito or Plaza. Diego Ocampo is a rookie coach, but straight away he pointed out that Murcia must improve their defense if they wish to advance, and little wonder, as those are the principles both Plaza and Aito follow. The question is whether one can expect that with the fat Cabezas on point guard, as one doubts he can apply full court pressure to anyone. This is what probably prompted the decision to bring in three new point guards, and the most realistic candidate for the starting spot is Bruesa's last year play-maker Raulzinho Neto, who played for Brazil at the WC, as he is a rounded out player who can perform absolutely any task on court.

Murcia are much better balanced than last year. Luckily, they've kept half of their team together, starting with shooter Wood and forward Kelati, and continuing with the inner line where they have Lima, Radović, Antelo and Arteaga. Apart from play-makers, they also brought in  a quality shooter from Sevilla, Bamfort, and Rojas from Dominican Republic for the 2 and 3 positions. Rojas is so far an unknown quantity, but many articles speak of him as a great defender who will guard the best opposing point guards. He will be coordinating with Kelati on the wing, who is renowned as a good defender and played for Perasović in Valencia.

Ocampo struggled with injured Neto, Wood and Arteaga during preparations, but all three are expected to play.

- It's up to us whether we'll be able to beat Valencia, we have to match their intensity and play a clever game, it's important to parry them- said Ocampo, whose team performed rather well in their last preparation matches, beating Estudiantes and Nizhny Novgorod, and losing 77-75 to Canarias.

- Playing defense well enables the team not to depend on inspiration. It's easy to play when you score all the time, but solid teams play defense even when they cannot make shots or are not performing well.

Valencia are arriving without one of their main players, power forward Bojan Dubljević. He will have a huge role after Doellman leaves, but had shoulder surgery during the summer and has yet to fully recover. They've got some issues with Van Ross and Sato, two important starters, but they've been confirmed for this match.

Valencia did not change much, although there will be some important differences in the inner line, where they now have Aguilar, Lončar, Harangody and Liščuk. Aguilar is increasingly important as he takes over the burden Doellman carried, while Lončar is better on offense than Triguero, who bailed out.

They played a close match with Real in the Supercup for 35 minutes (74-73), which makes the final -13 a somewhat distorted reflection of the match. Real buried them with 3-pointers in the end, and they lost their chances to get to the final. Murcia is next in this away match, and then Sevilla and Olympiacos at home.

-Murcia are much better than they used to be, as they've beaten Novgorod for example, who then proceeded to defeat us. I see them as a very competitive team- pointed out Perasović, who put special emphasis on Murcia's inner lineup as very difficult to guard due to their high mobility.

Valencia played their first prep match this summer against Murcia, winning 80-52.
