Brazil lose after video analysis

  • Published:

While Brazil were involved in a trench war against the hosts, the Russians enjoyed their free days and the outcome of the first day in the Atlas Arena definitely worked into their favor. If they win tonight, they will secure the finals and eliminate Brazil

Brazil lost their first game of the tournament at what was probably the worst possible moment. Until yesterday, they were the only undefeated team on the tournament but they couldn't withstand the pressure of the very good Polish team carried by the whole arena of their fans. Rezende couldn't count on experienced Murilo due to his injury, and Sidao started the match while Wallace joined in from time to time.

Murilo's absence proved to be a major handicap as his vast experience is a big confidence boost for the team, while Rezende used his second libero Felipe as the 12th player. Fonteles played in Muril's stead, a player with a much different player and a bigger inclination for offense than defense, which proved to be Brazil's major flaw. Both Murilo and Wallace are better in defense than Fonteles and Vissotto and the chances of Murilo playing today are very slim.

Four Brazilians got a double-digit efficiency, and the most points were collected by Vissotto (17). Lucarelli and Fonteles added 16 each while Lucas ended the game with 15 points. Brazil were up by 2-1 in sets, 10-6 in the fourth set and two match points later on but they didn't use any of it. Today, they just have to go for the win, they need three points and every defeat means they can say goodbye to the semifinals. The players are under tremendous pressure, as is coach Rezende and they will most probably be without Murilo, Wallace is not 100% ready as well as Sidao and things will be very uncomfortable for them.

The fact that they had to spend almost two and a half hours on the court while the Russians enjoyed their two-day rest certainly doesn't work well for them. At the end of the game, the Brazilian coaching staff complained to the referees about the decision regarding the last point, even though the video clearly shows Sidao touched the ball before it went out.

While the Brazilians battled on the court, the Russians enjoyed their second day of rest that they needed badly. Coach Voronkov couldn't count on their opposite Pavlov in their last game due to minor injury and he was replaced by Moroz. When Moroz got injured in the middle of the second set, Voronkov's problems started and his scream said everything that needed to be said. He was taken off the court and Russia didn't recover from that until the end of the match.

There were even some allegations that Moroz would leave Poland, while others claimed he would be ready for today's game but Moroz denied everything:

- I will not leave Poland nor will I be ready for Brazil. There is a certain progress as we have excellent doctors here but I can't stand on my leg. The swelling is still big.

The defeat against Brazil didn't shake the Russians too much as they were more worried about their opposite's injury and according to the latest information, Pavlov is still not 100% ready as well. It's still unknown who will play in this delicate position as Musersky and Ilynikh can fill in, but the best thing would be if Pavlov recovered.

- I think this game won't have too many similarities to the one three days ago. Brazil played well then but nothing more, and we were below standard. We will not repeat something like that. We have to show more concentration, especially on the reception. The fact that Brazil lost against Poland will not make our job easier, but we are aware that a win will put us in the semifinals - said receiver Sergey Savin.

Although games such as this one are difficult to predict, I just have to try a bet on Zbornaja, for several reasons. The last info we got says Petrov is ready to play, so the Russians will have their "natural" opposite. Pavlov is not a world class player, but his experience helps the team a lot. Brazil will once again be missing Murilo, which was quite obviously a problem yesterday. He is this team's most experienced player, the best on defense besides libero Mario, and his sub Fonteles is still primarily an offense player and never did well on defense. Playing with two offensive receivers is always a risk, even with teams such as Brazil. Wallace is not fully fit and entered from the bench yesterday, even if he were to play I doubt it would make any difference. Fatigue is the second factor. Brazil have changed venues and played an exhausting match last night while Russia rested and watched. After the match none of Brazil players arrived to the mandatory press conference, and the post-game fallout started to surface in the morning. Selector Rezende showed the middle finger to a Polish reporter, Lucarelli complained that Poland provoked them, and they were picking a fight with anyone off court after the match, which just means they're nervous and pressuring the organizers and refs as a loss would mean goodbye to a medal. It's been less than a day since the last match, and with all the mess after it I would not be surprised if the crowd was against them. Poland could get to the semifinal if Russia wins, and I believe the fans will forget the traditional animosity and support them. Brazil beat the Russians in the last match, but everything suggests the selector hid some of his moves in that match for the future game. Russia would eliminate the main title contender if they won and practically put a hand on the trophy, so they'll be motivated enough. With all that said, the Russians should not be underestimated, the odds on Brazil are declining based on the last match, but yesterday's events favor Russia. I doubt they wish to bet the semifinal on a match against the home team in front of 15 thousand frantic fans and somewhat supporting referees. I expected close odds, so anything over @1,90 on Russia is a nice value.
