Germany played the worst game of their tournament

Iran have been doing well throughout the entire tournament but the system of competition almost cost them the final stages. Now they're even more determined to keep up the good performances

What Germany showed yesterday was absolutely weak. We didn't see absolutely anything good from the team that beat Canada by 3-0, especially on their serve. They practically didn't have their serve at all, actually, and they made 12 errors and got 0 aces, which is why this aspect decided the winner. Their libero Tille, who had been fantastic until then, was in a bad mood and only played a part of the first set when Heynen replaced him with Steurwald.

They were destroyed in the second set by N'Gapeth who won 12 out of 26 points for France and that was when Germany lost any realistic chance of getting a positive result. Grozer with 14 and Kaliberda with 11 were the best in Germany's ranks, but this was the worst performance from the Germans on this entire WC, including their defeats against Brazil and Russia. Now they need a miracle to reach the semifinals as they have to beat Iran by 3-0 or 3-1 and wait for help from France, who will only need one set to reach the semifinals. Heynen admitted France were the better team:

- The key to this defeat lies in our mistakes. You can't have 15 errors in first two sets and then expect a good result. France deserved to win, they were the better team. We will not give up against Iran.

During this tournament, Iran continue their run of good games which started in the World League. They're no longer exotic passers-by but are the contenders for top spots. Just how renowned the Iranians are by other teams was reflected before the tournament when many experts predicted they would go far. So far, they've met the expectations but their ambitions grew as they reached the third stage.

They have gotten only 2 defeats so far. France were the only team to outplay them while they had a match-point to get back from 0-2 against the hosts but they didn't use it. Despite of everything, they weren't sure until the last round whether they will reach the last stage. The condition for that was beating Serbia and USA or Poland losing. Their chances were quite slim.

- Serbia made our situation more difficult even though the result didn't matter to them. The win gave us a chance to reach the next stage but we have to wait for the outcome of other games. It's really uncomfortable after our excellent performances that we will have to count our points from each game to see whether we go through. We've done what we could - said captain Marouf after their 3-1 against Serbia.

Iran did what they could and took three points and shortly after found out that Argentina beat USA. They videos of their joy soon became a hit on Youtube.

- We've reached the final stage not because we were lucky but because we have been playing well for the past four months. We've beaten teams like Italy and Brazil in Teheran but abroad as well - said coach Slobodan Kovač at the press conference ahead of this duel.

Even though the result may not suggest so, Iran played a great game against Serbia. The absolute hero was their opposite Ghafour who destroyed their opponents with 30 points. Coupled with 12 points from their traditionally strong block and only 19 errors in 4 sets, we can state that their level of performance was very high.

- We've played well throughout the entire tournament and we want to continue with good performances - concluded Kovač.

These two teams played their last official duels last year in the World League and in two matches each team got a win and a three-set defeat. Germany were without Grozer while Iran were without Ghaemi and Mirzajanpour and are now much more organized than they were back then.
