Sevilla - Feyenoord (2:0)

Redesigned Sevilla starting their title defense

  • Published:

Sevilla are the reigning champions of the Europa League but have made quite a few changes in their squad, while rejuvenate Feyenord haven't been too successful at the start of the new season

Every summer Sevilla sell their best players and this summer was no exception. But at the same time, the club gets great results year after year. After the first three rounds, we can see that Unai Emery has organized his new players well. Sevilla have 7 points and their performances have been very good.

Sevilla are the reigning champions of the Europa League, which means that Emery will pay close attention to this competition:

- We have high expectations from this competition but I wouldn't want to put my players under pressure by saying we have to defend the title. It's clear we're one of the prime candidates to take the Europa League title but in the competition with great clubs, we can't talk so far ahead about defending the title. We're the favorites in our group as well but words alone mean nothing as we will have to prove our role as the favorites on the pitch. We are playing our first game against Feyenoord, a team with a rich tradition which is not doing too well at the moment. It's clear as they have many young players but they shouldn't be underestimated as I'm sure they can be very dangerous.

There was a lot of talk in the Spanish media about the rotations in the squad but Emery didn't give the clearest answer:

- I've registered all players for this game but we are playing in three competitions this season and it's clear I can't completely wear out a couple of players. I will send a competitive squad onto the pitch against the Dutch and there will be a place in the squad for a player or two who didn't play in the league on Sunday.

What we know for sure is that Sevilla will have to use their third-choice keeper Sergio Rico after Beto and Barbosa got injured. Apart from them, defender Cristoforo and forward Gameiro are out of action, with the latter being a long-term absentee.

Feyenoord started their European campaign in the 3rd round of Champions League playoffs where they were eliminated by Besiktas but then they eliminated Zorja from the Europa League playoffs with a goal in the 90th minute of the second leg to make it 4-3.

The rejuvenated Rotterdam team are undergoing a series of embarrassing results in the league as they were defeated by the league newcomers Willem II at their De Kuip. Coach Fred Rutten and his players are going to Spain in a bad atmosphere and with many questions about the team, but they're hoping they will be able to put up a decent resistance.

- Europa League works under different rules than the league and even though I think Sevilla are the prime favorite in our group while we, Rijeka and Standard will fight for the second spot, we have a chance in this game if we play strong and as a collective - thinks Feyenoord's coach Fred Rutten, who's done a good job at detecting his team's weaknesses, which is soft game in which they lose duels far too easily and the domination on the pitch.

- My players have to show great desire and discipline to perform their duties as talent is not worth a lot without that kind of approach. We have been too soft in our game so far and we have to improve, and European games could help us in that. A positive result in Seville would be very important for us - concluded Rutten. Some of his important players are injured, such as defenders Boulahrouz and Lopes Cabras, midfielder Immers, while forward Kazim-Richards is suspended.

Feyenoord are devoid of their more experienced first-team players and Rutten has announced a 4-2-3-1 system today.
