Chelsea gaining momentum, Schalke in a crisis

  • Published:

The English have opened the new season well, staking their claim on the Champions League title. The Germans have little to brag about with a weakened team and poor results

Chelsea have massive momentum at the start of the season, earning four victories in the first four league rounds, with their biggest offensive reinforcement Diego Costa already scoring seven of their total 15 goals. The powerful scorer was the missing factor for the London team last season in order for them to reach further than the semifinal of the Champions League, and now he has him, the only thing Jose Mourinho needs to fear is the possibility of an injury.

However, Chelsea have a number of strong players in midfield, Mourinho also insists that backs go far into offense, and the center backs are in the opponents penalty area during every set piece. Chelsea are a rounded up and very well balanced team, and Mourinho is a specialist in offensive football and mental preparation, which means there are high hopes for this season at Stamford Bridge.

Their first guests from the Champions League are German Schalke, perhaps even the strongest rival in a group that also contains Sporting from Lisbon and Slovenia's Maribor, but they are still a rival below the level of the home team.

- We're still far from perfection, but we try to get better every day. There is obviously an evolution compared to the past season when we did a lot. We reached the Champions League semifinal and contended for the Championship title. It will be hard to top that this season, but we have a better team, and are more compact. A second season in a team is a good time for evolution and improvement, and we're in good shape prior to it's start against Schalke- clarified Chelsea's strategist Jose Mourinho, who has the entire roster at his disposal. A few changes are expected in the starting 11, meaning Felipe Luis might start as the left back, with Ramirez playing the defensive midfielder position.

- Our motivation stays the same and cannot change regardless of our opponents, it's what drives us forward. I work for my team, my players and my fans, not for myself. It makes not difference who the opponents are, we want to win every match, although we know that might not be possible some times. However, the key is in not changing the attitude- says the Portuguese insisting that motivation is crucial, aware that underestimating anyone could be fatal, and probably remembering how Chelsea lost to Basel at Stamford Bridge last year in group stage. However, they beat Schalke in both games, with a decisive 3-0 score both times.

The Germans started the season very poorly, dropping out of the Cup and winning just a point after three rounds in the Championship (though it was won against Bayern). They were demolished by  M'gladbach (4:1) in the last round.

- Chelsea are among the title contenders in the Champions League, while our goal is to just get to the second stage. Many have written us off too early, but that's what they did prior to the Bayern match too, and we remained undefeated- said coach Keller.

As this is the team that came in third in the Bundesliga last season, perhaps he should stop acting like a victim and an underdog that are out of place against the best teams.

However, that might be one of the reasons the media never liked him. Although his results are not bad when you tally up the score, the talks of him getting replaced are still around, and the injury situation is not in his favor either.

- Once again we started the season with some important players missing, and now our captain and main defender Howedes got injured as well. We don't know how long he'll be out, but he will certainly be missed, both as a player and as a leader on court- said Keller.

There are no secrets here, the Germans will try to field a 4-2-3-1 setup, but the question remains how long they'll be able to keep it up under the strong pressure the English are expected to produce.
