Bayer need to learn to play for the result

The German team had a 3-0 lead in Stuttgart last weekend but allowed the opponent to make a comeback. Zenit recorded three consecutive draws after a good run

When Leverkusen appointed Roger Schmidt as the new coach (previously lead Red Bull Salzburg), it got obvious Bayer will play an offense-oriented game. But, what worked just fine in before, doesn't always seem to be working in the top league. They don't seem to have an alternative to the offense-oriented high-paced game and instead of shifting their focus to defense after taking the 3-0 lead in Stuttgart last weekend, they allowed the opponent to make a comeback for a 3-3 draw...

- We need to bounce back quickly. We know how good Zenit are, they're even a level higher than last year. But, if we does we did against Benfica, we'll do fine - Schmidt said and warned about a particular tactical detail:

- We need to be very careful when they take possession. They've extremely goal-oriented and very dangerous in counter-attacking. They have top offense players whose individual quality can decide the game.

In the meantime, Zenit met Monaco for another goalless draw, but their win in Lisbon could turn out to be crucial in the end. 

- We need to improve, we can't do like we did in the previous games. Those were not our best performances which means we need to do our best against Bayer. One of the best thing about them is that they start every game extremely fiercely - coach Villas-Boas said and added:

- We have a strategy, of course. The teams are very similar and we will try and win to improve our chances ahead of the game in Saint Petersburg. They are one of the best teams with a great, offense-oriented game. But our game has a few good segments as well.

He doesn't have any trouble with absences today. Midfielder Shatov is the only one whose participation in the game is questionable, but the most likely outcome is him playing.
