Paris - Saint Raphael (27:22)

PSG two steps away from winning the title

  • Published:

They also cannot afford any slips because Montpellier are sitting top table. They're one point ahead after playing one game more. A potential defeat today would ruin everything good they did against Dunkerque and Montpellier

Paris recorded three home defeats this season, one one of them to Saint Raphael. There is simply no room for another defeat as that would see them lose the race for the French championship title. Granted, they are one point short of the top table Montpellier, who beat Dunkerque easily last night  but PSG are one game short and a win today would see them get back on top. Last round's match will be another one in Paris against the currently horrible Tremblay. Two wins will see Gardent take a title in spite of a mediocre season his team had.

Paris got in a situation to take the title through wins over Dunkerque and especially Montpellier. Montpellier slipped against Chambery last round, who by the way, lost to Nimes yesterday. Thse great wins needed to be confirmed in small games which are always the toughest ones for Paris. It was not particularity easy against Cesson away last week as PSG opened the last 10 minutes with a narrow 22-21 lead. Cesson were very close but Kopljar, Narcisse and Hansen took case of them. Cesson's offense is simply without enough options to pose a threat and PSG's defense did a good job this time.

The most important thing happening at PSG lately was Mikkel Hansen signing a contract extension which is valid until 2019. That put a end to all the rumors regarding his possible move to Barcelona or Kiel. PSG's top player is staying and we have to wait a while longer to see whether the top player in the world Karabatic would join them over the summer.

As for today's game, PSG are still without Accambray, which puts a lot of strain on Hansen-Narcisse duo and gives the veteran Bojinovic some time on the floor. He scored 2 goals in 4 attempts against Cesson. The whole team played an average game (Hansen 5/12, Honrubia and  Kopljar 1/3 each, Abalo 0/3, Barachet 2/6...) but we should point out that the 18-year-old Kounkouda played a debut at Paris and finished with a perfect 3/3 efficiency.

Unlike Cesson, who are powerful in defense, St. Raphael are an offense-oriented team who will punish each of opponent's mistakes. Paris are in a perfect situation, they know they are in control and only two steps from the final goal. We should expect a proper approach and a good-quality game on their part today.

St. Raphael are pretty bad away. They won 5 out of the 12 away games and lost even to Nimes, played draws against Cesson and Creteil. They are not under pressure here since Chambery and Dunkerque, who are visiting team's rivals in the spot 3 which guarantees a Champions League qualification, both lost last night. Regardless of the outcome of this game, St. Raphael cannot lost the final round game to Dunkerque. That is the key game of their season, far more important than this one. They currently have the same number of points as Dunkerque but have the one win in the head-to-head game. A win home would guarantee them the spot 3, which would be a huge achievement in a season marked by first choice middle back Morten Olsen leaving the team in the key week.

Back player Krantz got back to give the team new freshness. Right back Stehlik recovered from an injury as well. It's important to say that Atlason got a bit better as well. Di Panda, Abiliy and him make good back line capable of making anyone's lives difficult if opponents' defense isn't tough enough. St. Raphael struggle against good defenses as the 23-23 draw against Cesson recently proved. That is definitely how PSG should play them.

Right back Stehlik missed last week's game over Istres (38-30 win) and there is no information regarding him today. The rest of the team should be at coach Da Silva's disposal.
