Villarreal - Espanyol (0:3)

Villarreal looking to get their Europa League ticket against unmotivated Espanyol

  • Published:

After they were eliminated from the Cup, the away team slipped into an apathy they can't seem to shake

Villareal have significantly stagnated in form lately, but the away match at Valencia is a special occasion for both their players and fans. The game is a major local derby, able to get the most out of players even at their lowest point. Villarreal did not exactly shine at Mestalla, but they managed to make things complicated for their opponent and return home with a big point.

The goal of Marcelino Garcia Toral is still getting to Europe:

-A point from Mestalla is a big thing, but we have to start winning again too. Yes, our ranking looks good, but the lead can melt quickly, so we must not relax. We're looking to get three points against Espanyol, and I'm convinced that a victory would be a major step towards European competition.

There are quite a few absences that are issues for Marcelino. Bojan Jokić and Moi Gomez have officially recovered from their injuries, but the coach will spare them today.  Bruno Soriano, Adrian Marin and Denis Čerišev are still injured. Center back Victor Ruiz  is back in the ranks, after he wasn't even on the roster in the last round, he will be starting today.

We've been reporting on the huge blow to morale that Espanyol suffered after getting eliminated from the Cup semifinal. The team from Barcelona seem to have mentally sunk, and the draw against Elche did not help matters. The away team need not worry about survival in the league, but they'll probably need some four or five more points in their last nine rounds if they're to confirm their stay in theory as well.

There has also been a lot of talk in the media about "bad season endings" for the away team in this match. Allegedly, Espanyol have been securing their stay in the league relatively early for a few seasons in a row, and since they're not aiming to get to the European competitions, they 'sell out' points in the end  of the season. Coach Sergio Gonzalez commented on those theories during his last press conference:

-Everyone's clearly made their decision about us, despite the season not being over yet. To my knowledge, people are innocent until proven guilty in Spain, but we've obviously been convicted in advance, without any evidence. I can assure you that our goal is to play the best we can, we're professionals after all, and we'd like to be ranked the best we can.

Sergio Gonzalez' roster will be rounded up by center back Alvaro Gonzalez who worked off his cards, but the same issue deprived the coach of midfielder Salvador Sevilla and back Rafael Fuentes.
