Mainz - Bayern Munich (1:2)

Bayern conceded one goal in the last 14 rounds

  • Published:

After opening the season with 8 undefeated rounds, Mainz now have a run of 8 rounds without a win. The visitors are extremely powerful and beat any team they're faced with. Bayern conceded a total of only 3 goals this season, two of which in the first two rounds. The numerous absences might be a problem today

Mainz managed to stay undefeated in Cologne, but that did nothing to help them meet the expectations. They were after the three points, but the home team were better and more willing. Mainz even got lucky early on when Koln were denied what seems to be a perfectly good goal (alleged offside), with their only proper attempt happening 15 minutes till the end when Okazaki hit the post. After opening the season with 8 undefeated rounds, Mainz went on to not record a single win in the last 8. The opponents they are set to face today will most likely keep it going.

- It's not that we stand no chance even though some might think so, but we believe we can stand up to them. They played three draws away and we lost only one out of 7 home games - coach Hjulmand said.

His problem is the fact his defense is to face the mighty Bayern's offense without a few important defenders. Bungert and Bell are out for sure and team captain Noveski is questionable. He is in the lineup for now, but it doesn't mean things won't change till kick-off. Midfielders Mortiz and Baumgartlinger are out as well.

- We need to do our absolute best, but not even that might be enough. The opponents are sometimes too powerful, no matter how good you are. I hope that won't be the case today - the Danish coach added.

It would not be surprising if he goes with a more defense-oriented plan today. His offense will rely on Okazaki for the most part, as per usual.

Bayern recorded yet another easy win last round. Freiburg stood no chance and the final 2-0 win for Bayern could have been much greater only if they wanted it to...

- I'm happy with my players and my team. We struggle with injuries, but that is not reason not to get three points in Mainz - Guardiola said.

He is right when saying that injury struggles were never greater. Benatia, Alonso and Lewandowski joined the already long injury list following the Freiburg game.

What will Pep do to make up for them? Not much probably. His defense line is very good, with only the midfielder position seeming questionable. If Rode can't play (cold), young Hojbjerg will step in.

No Lewandowski? There are Ribery, Robben, Gotze and Muller...If necessary, Piazarro will be waiting on the bench.

Bayern have much greater quality, which means everything will come down to their motivation. For the one hundredth time, Bayern don't need this win, but neither did they need all those wins in the previous rounds, which didn't stop them from winning in the end. How else to explain the fact they conceded a single goal in the last 14 Bundesliga games.
