Real Madrid - Atletico Madrid (1:1)

A duel of old enemies

  • Published:

The Madrid clubs split the national trophies last season, and will face off in the Supercup at the start of this season

Madrid was the city with most football trophies last season, not only in Spain, but worldwide. Real and Atletico split the national trophies, with Atletico surprisingly taking the championship while Real had to make do with the Cup. However the Kings got their revenge in the Championship League final in Lisbon, winning their tenth European title after extra time, against this very same opponent.

Compared to the past season, there have been changes on both teams, but the backbone of the teams remained pretty much the same. Real made some spectacular transfers, such as bringing James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Keylor Navas, while the team lost their first goalie Diego Lopez, and less significantly Alvaro Morata.

Atletico sent off their last seasons best scorer Diego Costa, who moved to Chelsea, and left back Filipe Luis followed him to London as well. Among the more important absences its worth mentioning the return of goalie Thibault Courtois to Chelsea. However, Atletico brought in strong reinforcements to all positions. This meant getting goalies Jan Oblak (Benfica) and Miguel Angel
Moya (Getafe), backs Cristian Ansaldi (Zenit) and Guillherme Siqueira (Granada),
and forwards Mario Mandžukić (Bayern) and Raul Jimenez (America Mexico). The most expensive transfer however was the one in which left winger Antoine Griezmann arrived from Real Sociedad.

Carlo Ancelotti is usually a talkative coach, but during his last press conference prior to the Supercup he gave some rather short statements.

Goalie?

- Iker Casillas will be tending the goal against Atletico. Not sure who will do it in the first round league match.

Di Maria?
-I don't want to talk about him, no point in losing focus on such issues prior to the Atletico match.

James?
- There is nothing wrong with him. He changed a team, friends, coach, and will need time to adjust to us, but I'm pleased with him.

Diego Lopez?
- We had no intention of getting rid of him, he chose to change teams himself.

Game setup?
- We'll be playing the same way we played last season.  Of course, they may be changes during the match, but the general idea will stay the same.

With Real there were some issues concerning the status of Raphael Varane,
Karim Benzema, Angel di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo, but all four had full practice yesterday, meaning Ancelotti has a ful roster. The only missing cog in the machine is severely injured Jese Rodriguez, but the young forward would have a hard time finding a spot even if he were healthy.

Atletico won their tenth national title last season, and coach Diego Simeone kept repeating almost to the very last moment that Barcelona and Real were favorites for the title. Judging from what Mario Suarez is saying, we'll be hearing the same this season:
-Real are absolute favorites in the Supercup, and I say that both because of the transfers they made this summer and because we're talking about the current European champions after all. We're looking at two very tough matches against a very familiar opponent, who also know us very well. We could have our chances, but we'll have to stay focused and make very few mistakes.

Good news for Diego Simeone is that he has a full roster at his disposal today.

In closing, we should mention that Real already won a trophy in the new season, beating Sevilla in the European Supercup.
