Football » Europa League, Fourth Qualifying Round
20.08.2014. 23:00 Finished
Stjarnan - Inter Milano (0:3)

Stjarnan undefeated so far this season

  • Published:

The team from Iceland have not lost a match in 16 rounds of their home league, and went undefeated in the two preliminary rounds of the Euroleague. However, Inter are the absolute favorite, regardless of their poor form

The luck of the draw brought Inter a team with the lowest odds in the first round of the Euroleague, Stjarnan from Iceland, who are the most pleasant surprise of the qualifications. The home team went through two preliminary rounds, beating first the Scottish representatives after extra time, and then Polish Poznan as well. They barricaded themselves on defense against their second opponent, and it worked in the end.

- We're ready to fight. We tried to analyze the way Inter play and find the best way to parry them. Our goal is to get the best possible result, as they're the best team we've faced so far, but they have their weak spots as well- said coach Sigmundsson boldly before the match.

What can be seen from the roster is that he should not be making any major changes compared to previous matches, leading us to conclude the Iceland team will field their best side. The formation announced is 4-4-2, although that will be hard to see, realistically speaking, as they will spend most of the game in and around their penalty area.

After all, what is there to say about a team whose total value is estimate at a little over 1 million Euro. By comparison, just two of the announced players on Inter's roster (backs Dodo and Jonathan) have an individual market value of under 10 milion.

Inter are facing two games in which they'll be hugely favored to win, but where a relaxed start can also be extremely dangerous.

Coach Mazzarri is also aware of that:

-A match such as this one can be a trap, as they're in good form and undefeated for six matches. They've already been through three rounds of qualifications so they're certainly in better shape physically than we are, meaning we need to be careful and not open any chances. They admit to have seen videos of our game and seen we have weaknesses as well. We're the one who have something to lose, but we'll do our best to stop that from happening.

Mazzari knows Inter are a huge favorite:

- We always try to control the match, we are Inter and that is normal. We'll try to dominate away as well. We'll stay cautious, it's in our DNA, and play our game regardless of the opponent. Cold weather? In theory I like that, as players run more when they're cold.

Mazzarri did not pick his best forward Palacio for the roster in this match as he is still getting his form back after the World Championship. Recovered Kuzmanović took his place instead, but is not expected to start. Among the options for this match are also the newly arrived center back Vidić, midfielder M'Vila and forward Osvaldo.

In closing, we should add the match is played on neutral ground, as the home team's arena is missing the necessary licence. As Reykjavik is close, this should not reflect poorly on support from the home fans, if that will mean anything.
