Minden - Magdeburg (35:26)

Magdeburg without pressure, Minden must win

  • Published:

The home team's stay in the league practically depends on the outcome of Lemgo's games as well as their own, but in the two games against Magdeburg and Friesenheim they need to take at least three points to at least have some hope

In the last two rounds, Minden played two excellent defensive games, conceded 25 goals against Melsungen and 24 against Kiel, so two teams that played in Europe this season. But they won only one point, at home against Melsungen, and their chances to avoid relegation haven't significantly improved. Minden still depend on others, especially Lemgo who are two points ahead of them and are first above the danger zone. With all that, Lemgo have much better goal difference (the first criterion in Germany in case of a same number of points), so Minden only have a chance if they win more points than Lemgo in the last two rounds. And there is only one scenario for that - they can't lose anymore games. Lemgo have games against Hamburg and Kiel left, so that's giving Minded some hope, but they first have do their part of the job.

Minden were losing by one point a minute before the end in Kiel last week, but they didn't make a sensation.

- Our base was our strong and active 6-0 defense with the excellent goalkeeper Eijlers - said coach Frank Carstens after the defeat, also praising the 'defensive tradition which didn't allow Kiel to create a lot of counterattack chances'

They will need all of that today as well because Magdeburg love to go for counterattacks and attacks through the first wave. Coach Carstens will have additional motivation, with securing the stay in the league, because he was recently fired from Magdeburg, and above mentioned goalkeeper Eijlers also played there.

- Magdeburg are playing a great season, they became more creative with more variables - Carstens said calmly.

- They have a great defense and fast transition, and they create a lot of pressure.

Accordingly, Minden will once again need a lot of discipline and focus in the offense, with minimum number of mistakes. They, as in previous games, can't count on Kozlina, Sudmeier and Schmidt.

That is a smaller handicap that Bezjak's absence for Magdeburg and that was obvious in Berlin against Fuchse, where they not only lost the game, but probably also the chance for a better achievement and a Champions League spot, in other words, the third position. Flensburg are now two points ahead of them, and if Vranjes' team doesn't fail (last round in Berlin), then Magdenburg will lose the Champions League. They have left, other then Minden, a home game against Lowen, which they can hardly win.

Bezjak's absence in Berlin wasn't even the biggest problem. They scored 27 goals, conceded 32. The Berliners's back duo Nenadic-Igropulo scored quite enough (16) and Magdeburg's defense was far from their usual level.

- Even if some think we have nothing to play for anymore, we don't want to give anything away. It is important for the development of the team to win this kind of away games, even when the stakes are not high - said winger Robert Weber.

- This is an important game for Minden, I expect they will play with full power the whole 60 minutes and be physically very aggressive - said director Steffen Stiebler.

- We have to, first and foremost, hold up in the defense.

Coach Sveinsson will have at his disposal the same team as in Berlin, that is without Bezjak, Rojewski and Grafemhorst.

Minden don't have enough talent and offensive possibilities in Doder, Bilbia, Schapsmeier and Scheinert, as Fuchse have with Nenadic, Igropulo, Drux or Wiede, which should make the job easier for the defense, that can hardly play worse than it did in Berlin. If they have the right approach, which has been announced in Magdeburg.

There simply isn't a reason to doubt that Minden will continue the same way they did in the previous two games when they played 25-25 at home against Melsungen, and 23-24 at Kiel. These are two top teams, and they're facing another one which was offensively deprived with the injury of their best playmaker Marko Bezjak. Even with him in the lineup, the first game in Magdeburg finished 28-22. Minden's life depends on this game, if they lose they will probably be relegated, and statements from Magdeburg say that they will not be giving anything away and that they want to play better than they did in Berlin a few days ago. Considering the circumstances Minden's offensive abilities, I can hardly imagine this on 55 or more goals. Also, with Eijlers, Oneto and Jernemyr they have top defensive power, and besides coach Carstens who was fired from Magdeburg, both Oneto and Eijlers as well as right back Schapsmeier will be highly motivated, because they all used to play for Magdeburg. That is just an added bonus to the far more important fact that they're fight for their life and their stay in the league. Magdeburg is, without Bezjak, forced to play the outside line with van Olphen, Haass and Natek, which is not very efficient against zone defense. which Minden will definitely force.
