Lowen - Kiel (28:29)

Many think the weakened Kiel will be on their knees

  • Published:

The guests are without Jicha, Palmarsson, and Lauge, which leaves Gislason with only Duvnjak and Canellas from the right handed back players. Lowen have two points more, the arena is sold out (13 000), and nobody important is missing

The world of handball will focus its attention to Mannheim today. The title defender will play an away game against their biggest rival, and they will play it without Jicha and Palmarsson, while they're two points behind. If Lowen go to +4, it's a big advantage, but not a final one because there's still a lot of things to do before the season ends - like the away game against Kiel, Hamburg, Flensburg and Magdeburg.

- The two of them won't be playing and it definitely won't be easy to compensate - Lowen assistant coach Oliver Roggisch said.

- Of course us players look forward to games against Kiel, and now the arena's been sold out, it'll definitely be a great experience - the goalie Niklas Landin thinks. He's one of the players who could change the course of the game, and one of the most important players in Mannheim team. He'll also be tending Kiel's goal starting next season, to make things interesting.

- Two points against Kiel are as valuable as two against Erlangen and Wetzlar, but besides boosting our self-confidence, they also get us a bigger advantage on the league table. We defeated Kiel here last year, too, and we haven't been defeated at home for over a year - the Danish goalie said.

Their overture was more than easy. First, they defeated Čehovski last weekend, with a lousy approach and miserable first half-time (16-16), and then they got to the third round of the Cup against the lower league club Heilbron. They're not tired, Jacobsen rotated them a lot and they're ready for Kiel. They have no injuries and are very motivated after losing the title in the last moments of the last season. As for the games against each other, Lowen won two out of three last year, but they were a better team in all three. The one they lost was in the league, and happened because of numerous mistakes by Alexander Petersson, something that rarely happens to a player of his caliber.

- No, we're not favorites, Kiel always are. They were the champion nine times in the last ten years. They'll always be the favorite. Two players are out for them, but they have an incredible roster, and that's their strength. Maybe it would be better for us if they were complete. When everyone's there, they become restless because they all want to play. This way, they're all fully motivated because they know they have to play their best.

Lowen's problem right now is playing on the set zone, and the best examples are the defeats against Vardar and Bergischer, where they couldn't get to the goal even when the opponents got sent off time and time again. They're stronger than Kiel defensively right now, the advantage works for the pivot Wiencek, who's prone to missing a lot, and Toft Hansen, they can't really measure up to Myrhol and Guardiola.

Kiel's back line, even when Palmarsson and Jicha were ready, oscillated a lot and couldn't really get the rhythm. Lowen's back line is kind of the same, where Jacobsen completely forgot about Kneer and uses him only in the defense, while Mensah Larsen gets, perhaps, too many chances.

- I think Lowen have a good chance, not only to defeat Kiel, but to win the title, as well. Maybe this is their last chance because the balance of the strength will increase next season when Myrhol and Landin leave - Sky's analyst Henning Fritz thinks.

You have to keep in mind Lowen played numerous home games in the last year, defeated clubs like Barcelona, Kiel, Flensburg, and played evenly against Veszprem... Now they have to do it all over again.

Kiel's top games this season can be counted on the fingers of one hand - Metalurg, Fuchse, Melsungen, a half-time against Flensburg. Nothing else was really convincing. The same goes for the last round against Lubbecke (24-21). They defeated Lemgo in the Cup with half the strength because the guests came with their B team, and even though Duvnjak, Canellas, Weinhold and Vujin played the second half-time, it ended 15-12.

- I'm happy with how Weinhold played the middle, perhaps I'll use him more when Duvnjak and Canellas need a break - Gislason said after the Lemgo game.

Without three injured backs, he doesn't have much choice in the offensive. They have to score as many goals as possible through transition, after the top defense, something they did in Berlin and Skopje. The problem is that neither Fuchse nor Metalurg have a good offense right now, and Kiel's job was easier for it. Today, it'll be a whole different dimension, with increased stakes.
