Chelsea - Manchester United (1:0)

A point would do for Chelsea, United doing brilliantly but struggle with absences

  • Published:

Top table Chelsea managed to win the last three games to stay in a great lea, while United keep crushing their opponents. Ahead of the derby match in London, though, they are having massive injury-struggles, especially in defense

Chelsea barely managed to win the third consecutive game to leave Arsenal in spot two seven points short. That win over Queens Parks Rangers was extremely important ahead of the two toughest games left for Mourinho's side this season.

The first game is taking place at Stamford Bridge today against United and the second one next Sunday against Arsenal. Even if losing both of those games, Chelsea will be left with at least a one-point lead ahead of the postponed match with Leicester they still need to play.

That only goes to prove that the championship is won through small games and that Mourinho keeps on being lucky. His side had only shot on target last Sunday, 88 minutes into the game, and managed to score to beat QPR undeservedly. They are now completely relaxed about meeting United, who are in spot 3 and 8 points short.

It's the perfect chance for Mourinho to play a defense-oriented game for that one point he needs. That kind of tactics can also backfire, especially if the opponents are in such great form and bursting with confidence like United.

- Playing United means playing one of the greatest teams in the world. This is a game everyone wants to play and I'm not worried about my players' motivation. That is the easiest thing ahead of this kind of a game and we're all very excited and focused - Mourinho said. He once again entertained the media with his theories that everyone was fed up with Chelsea being top table since the start, which is why everyone turned against him. When asked whether he expects the Manager of the Season Award, Mourinho said:

- I have no idea who will get it but I don't expect it to be me since I was never once chosen the Manager of the Month. But, I'm not here for the consolation prize, I'm here to win Premier League!.

When it comes to his lineup, Chelsea's top scorer Costa is still injured, while his substitute Loic Remy struggled with an injury as well but is expected to play. All the other players are fit and ready.

- I've been analyzing the opponents all week long. They have a string of great players and a top-level coach Van Gaal. This will definitely be a great game in which we want to confirm our dominance. I love my team and I'm sure we'll reach our goal - Mourinho said. He recorded his last defeat at Stamford Bridge on April 19, 2014 to Sunderland.

United will have a tough time getting over the poor start to the season. They got too far behind in the championship race almost immediately, losing any chance of claiming the title in the end. Sometimes it just takes time for things to fall into place in football.

Despite being faced with a lot of criticism for his moves,, Van Gaal managed to get things going in the final third of the season, creating United that can be dominant and win, which means this season had not been a waste like the last one.

After taking a one-year break from European competitions, United will be back in Champions League next season. Until the end of this one, they aim to stay and finish in spot three or claim the runner up spot to avoid having to play CL qualifying round. United met their city rivals City last round to win easily 4-1 in the end even though City scored the game opener.

After 6 straight wins and only 2 defeats in the last 22 championship games, Van Gaal's team has every right to hope for a good game and good result at Stamford Bridge. It will come as no surprise if the visitors take risk and start dictating the pace to get three points against the top table team.

They are definitely capable of doing that, judging by their performances in the previous games, even though they struggles with injuries as 4 of their players had to leave the City game with injuries.

Defense is the greatest problem for Van Gaal because he cannot count on Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, and Daley Blind. Midfielder Carrick is out while Evans has a suspension. That leaves the manager with only three defenders and Chris Smalling and youngsters McNair and Blackett.

- When it comes to injuries , the worst possible thing happened ahead of the Chelsea game. I have almost no alternatives for defense and I'm thinking about putting Rooney in midfield - van Gaal said. The first question he was asked at that press conference is whether United can beat the top table team away. The Dutchman tried to elude answering that, talking mostly about the injury-struggles. When asked whether United can be champions, he said that is not likely to expect.

Knowing Van Gaal, he is probably very much hoping for a win today while cleverly hiding his strategy. The stats says that Unite won only 6 out of the last 23 championship games against Chelsea, while not recording a win since October 2012 when they won 3-2 at Stamford Bride.

- I'm not saying it's not possible but it's not logical to expect us to become champions. I think Chelsea will be happy with a point from this game while we'll try to get the three points. Home team are under pressure and you never know what their response will be like - Van Gaal said. He will have Van Persie back at his disposal today, while Falcao might get a chance too.
