Penafiel - Benfica (0:3)

Benfica coming for their seventh victory in a row

  • Published:

Not so long ago a bottom ranked team, Penafiel are scoring best results so far this season with seven points in the last three rounds, but are still underdogs against the leading team who are on a six game winning roll and want to keep their six point lead ahead of Porto

After two negative series of four and five defeats respectively, Penafiel took seven points in their last three matches which allowed them to enter 2015 with a position that guarantees them survival, but Rui Quinta's team have a long way to go yet after improving from their poor start to the season. Today their 25 de Abril arena will be hosting the leading team of the league, against whom they can play a relaxed game knowing there is no imperative of getting points, unlike their next match when they'll be meeting another direct competitor of the type they've dealt with recently.

However, the coach of the new first league team refuses to surrender and claims they'd cancel the game if they did nto believe they could score a good result:

- I believe the players will do their best to play a good game and get a positive result. If we had no illusions about winning we'd phone Lisbon and tell them the game is off.

Benfica lost one of their best players lately, but Rui Quinta does not see that as a significant handicap or favoring his team:

- Benfica have quality alternatives to Enzo Perez in their quality roster, and a coach fully prepared for the new situation. This does not worry me, neither do I want my players to think about Benfica too much, as this would lead us to forget ourselves and our own identity.

Rui Quinta's team will face the defending champons without João Pedro, Rui Miguel and Henrique, while André Fontes and Pedro Ribeiro are also out on suspension due to card issues.

Leading Benfica wish to enter 2015. with a victory and continue their current series of six consecutive victories, which would bring them a big six point lead ahead of Porto. The sale of Enzo Perez to Valencia might be somewhat of a blow to the ambitions of the Eagles, and their injury list also doesn't seem to be reducing, but they're somehow managing to win despite all that. In their last round match they managed to beat a bottom ranked team with a clear offside goal.

Jorge Jesus claims they will maintain their points lead in front of their main and likely only title contender, although his list for this game did not contain Eliseu or Luisão, who he hoped would recover:

- I thought they'd be ready for this match, but they haven't recovered sufficiently to be in the competition for this away match and the rigors of the league matches. Regardless of the opponent, Benfica want to start the 2015 with a victory, although we are aware this is a tricky away game and that the opponents will be highly motivated and ready to counterattack, especially through their quick wingers. We're ready for anything and are the team with least goals conceded next to Porto.

He sees Pizzi and Talisca as replacements for Enzo Perez, who was the best player of the league last season. Both of them can play in his position, but Talisca is much closer to it, while the option of them both playing is not out either. Sulejmani has finally recovered, and the remaining absentees are the suspended Samaris and injured Fejsa, Ruben Amorim and Salvio. These opponents already met in February 2014 at this venue for a Cup quarterfinal match, and Benfica won under difficult conditions, with a single goal by Sulejmani on a soaked pitch.
