Juventus - Lazio (2:0)

Juventus could bring the championship race to an end with a win

  • Published:

Allegri''s troubled with the fact that his team have a tough European away match in Monaco coming up, and the guests from Rome are worried because of the absences

The championship leader will host the second-placed Lazio in Torino. This is the worst time for Juventus to play a duel against their biggest rival. They made a blunder last week against the last-placed Parma, which allowed the Romans to reduce the difference on the league table to 12 points. Even though that's still a huge advantage for Allegri's team, the fact is that they're focused on the Champions League matches, which is why they played without their starters in Parma. On Tuesday, Juventus barely managed to beat Monaco thanks to Vidal's goal from the penalty kick, which could be discussed. Allegri will have to think things through and decide which players he'll let rest and how much he'll let them rest against Lazio, before the return fixture that's coming next Wednesday against Monaco.

Allegri wants Juventus to be focused against Lazio:

- Am I surprised we're still active in three fronts? I'm not surprised, that is a question that should be given to those who haven't seen Juventus in the current situation. A match against Lazio is a direct duel between the first and the second team of the league, they're going through a phenomenal season. Nobody saw Lazio getting the second place of Serie A when the season just began. They've got eight wins behind them, conceded the same number of goals we did in the second part of the season, and that definitely makes this match the most important one for the title of the champion. We've got a nice advantage on the league table, but also a cycle of important matches to play. We have to think about the match against Monaco only after we finish this one. This is the most important match for us right now, and the best formation will play.

The suspended center back Ogbonna will definitely miss this duel against the Romans, and also the previously injured midfielders Romulo and Pogba, and the backs Caceres and Asamoah. It's questionable how many starting players Allegri will spare before the duel against Monaco, but he definitely won't make changes as drastic as against Parma. We assume the back Padoin will get his chance to start, and the midfielder Sturaro and the forward Llorente. The young Coman also might substitute Pereyra as the second striker.

Lazio are having a great form, and they look unstoppable. After a big cup win against Napoli and getting to the final against Juventus, they secured playing Europe the next season, too. But, everyone in the club really want to play the Champions League. Considering the fantastic form they're having, that goal seems reasonable. A win in Torino would allow Lazio's fans to even dream about the title of the champion. Lazio are in a series of eight championship wins, six of which were with at least two goal difference, with a fantastic 18-1 goal difference total. Empoli gave Juventus a really hard time two weeks ago, and Lazio crushed them 4-0 in the last round, even though they played the last half hour of the match with a player less after Novaretti got sent off.

A fact that they didn't beat Juventus since 2003 is definitely not working in Lazio's favor, but Pioli wants to get all three points in Torino:

- Juventus are too many points ahead on the top of the league table, but our win could change that. We learned our lesson in the first duel against them this season, my team are much more intelligent and mature now. We have to be compact, that's the only way to play our game. We have to think one match at a time, and not about the champion title or the records. We still have a long way to go, and this is an important stop. Juventus were superior in the first match, and we have to demonstrate that we overcame that now. I don't regret that we're so much apart, I would have regretted it if we didn't play our best, but we always did.

The absences situation isn't ideal for Pioli. He can't count on the suspended defenders Cavanda and Novaretti, and the important center back De Vrij and the midfielder Parolo who got injured in the last round. Besides those, the defenders Konko, Radu and Gentiletti and the forward Đorđević have been injured previously.
