Torino - Napoli (1:0)

Torino haven't been defeated in the last 11 championship matches

  • Published:

Ventura's team have been playing great lately, but there's a question of how much Torino will be worn out mentally and physically after the match in Bilbao

Torino confirmed their great form with a great win against Athletic in Bilbao. That win took them to the round of 16 of the Europa League. It's interesting that the Basques were the ones who got Napoli eliminated from the Champions League. That success is only a continuation of good results Ventura's team had in the last weeks. Torino haven't been defeated in the last 11 championship matches. That winning series took Torino to share the ninth place with three points away from the sixth place. Sixth place would provide them the chance to play Europe next season, too.

The experienced Ventura wasn't hiding his thrill after the success in Bilbao:

- We wrote a big part of history for Torino. We're the first Italian team who won on San Mames, and that fact fills us with pride. We're so proud we're still in the Europa League, and we're still in the race in the championship even though we missed three penalty kicks. It's all part of our growing up.

Ventura won't be able to rely on the suspended midfielder Vives against Napoli, as well as the injured back Masiello and the newcomer midfielder Gonzalez. Bruno Peres is coming back to the right back, he can't play Europa League. The question is, how many changes will Ventura make in the starting eleven considering the physical and mental drain in Spain. Quagliarella and Martinez are assumed to lead the offense, and Moretti, Janson and Bovo should be in the defensive.

Unlike Torino who played a great game in Spain on Thursday, Napoli solved their European task against Trabzonspor in the first match already, so Benitez could rest his key players in the return fixture. Regardless, Napoli got a new win, so Benitez can brag about continuing the brilliant series of results in 2015. Besides passing through to the round of 16 of the Europa League and the national Cup semifinal, Napoli can also be proud of getting five wins in the last six championship matches.

Benitez wants to get a good result in Torino:

- I don't think Torino will be too tired after the Europa League. That win against Athletic only motivated them more, games like those are great for the team. We have to work a lot to tame Torino, we have to be like the big matadors. Compared to the previous matches, I'll spare some players, but I don't want to give any kind of advantage to Torino. A derby between Roma and Juventus? If we win, we can think about what's going to happen on Monday, but for now, our focus is solely on Torino.

Compared to the match against Trabzonspor, there were nine changes in Napoli's starting eleven. The most important one for Benitez is that the main goalgetter Higuain is back to the offense. The wing forward Mertens will miss the away match in Torino because he got suspended, and the back Zuniga and the wing fowards Michu and Isigne are still dealing with injuries.
