Cagliari - Juventus (1:3)

Cagliari without a win in Sardinia

  • Published:

Zeman's team conceded two goals to each of the three least efficient offenses in the league home and now face the most efficient Juventus

Sant'Elia Stadium is still waiting on it's first home win since Zeman took over. Cagliari's attacking is very attractive to watch, but it is not producing the expected results, which got the Sardinian team in the danger zone. They didn't record a win in 7 consecutive games and regardless of the offense-oriented approach didn't score the last three rounds.

Cagliari's attack failed to produce any goals last Sunday as they met Parma, the worst-performing defense in the league. Their task against the best defense is bound to be much tougher, but Zeman hopes for a good performance by his team:

- We won a point in Parma despite being nervous in the game. We had the chance to take the lead and win in the second half as it got obvious we were better prepared physically, but we didn't have those finishing touches when in their box. I have nothing to worry about ahead of the Juvenus game. They won so many trophies and we know we're in for a tough game. We need to try and do our very best. We won't be lacking motivation, but we will need to extremely focused and we will need to bring the number of mistakes to a minimum.

Good news for Zeman is that he can count on his top forward Ibarb, who should join wingers Farias and Cossu in offense. In defense, Zeman isn't giving up on the players who conceded two goals to each of the three worst-performing offenses in the league (Atalanta, Torino, and Chievo).

Cagliari are now facing an opponent much tougher than any of those - Juventus have the most productive offense in Serie A (averaging more than two goals per game). Balzano and Pisano are available for the right back position and we still have to wait and see whether Crisetig or Dessena will be given the right side of the midfield.

Having recorded two consecutive draws, Juventus allowed Roma to get only one point short in the table, which is why Allegri's side count on only one outcome of this game - a win. Juventus beat Cagliari in the last 4 head-to-head games in Sardinia (6 out of the last 7). Turin-based team still have the Supercup game with Napoli to do in Doha before year's end but before that want to secure top spot ahead of the short winter break by getting three points against Cagliari.

Juventus weren't doing badly as they met Sampdoria but after failing to score the second goal, the visitors from Genova started attacking which resulted in Gabbiadini scoring an equalizer. The same player had a good chance to get his team in the lead but the game ended as a draw in the end.

Allegri didn't like some of the referee's decision in that game, which resulted in his suspension:

- I am very surprised with the suspension, I thought it was a joke when I got the message. I always treated the officials with respect. My best line-up is to face Cagliari, we're not tired after having one of our best performances when it comes to physical fitness last Sunday. We made a few technical mistakes. We're in for a tough game now since Cagliari need points to get out of the danger zone. They have a lot of attacking solutions, like any team Zeman was in charge of. We need to get back to winning after doing well but failing to record a win against Sampdoria.

The visitors can't count on Bonucci (suspension) but Allegri has Ogbonni to step in for him. Llorente and Tevez should be in the line-up, which means Morata is to wait for his chance on the bench. We need to see who will be Juventus' play maker today - Vidal or Pereyra. Marchisio, Piro and Pogba are set to lead the midfield.
