Finland - Lithuania (81:90)

Murphy from NBA joined the Finnish team

  • Published:

the injured Kalnietis and Janavicius didn't travel to Finland with the team, just like Lavrinovic, who got some time off. Their biggest star Valanciunas is also still not on the team. But even so, Lithuania proved they're not affected by some absences in the preparation games they did so far - they beat Latvia once, and Georgia twice

Finland, the team that will participate in their first even World Championship in Spain (given a wild card by FIBA), have done only one preparation period match so far. They met Germany in Leipzig and lost by 7 points. They were doing  pretty well in that match, except for the third period, mostly because of Koponen (16p, 5a), Lee (13p, 6r), and Haanpa (16p, 4s). That was over a week ago, and in the meantime, an NBA player Erik Murphy, whose mother is Finnish, joined the team. His NBA status should be taken with a pinch of salt since he's mostly been doing the garbage time at Chicago, but he will definitely be a great help for Finland.

- As long as he's doing his best, and making constant progress, I'll be happy. We play the so called open system, which is much more difficult to adjust to than the closed system. Erik has enough skills to adjust - coach Dettman said, and Murphy added:

- I already got some tapes of my colleagues playing so I already know their style, and I know what the team is aspiring to.

He didn't have much time to adjust since he joined only 5 or 6 days ago. His debut will happen at the 75th anniversary of the Finish basketball association, in a game against the current European championship runner-up Lithuania.

- I expect him to have a great influence on the game, and to lead his colleagues. Lithuania are the right test for us to see where we are. It will be a tough challenge - Dettmann said. His assistant Touvi added:

- Their pace in counter-attacks, and in offense is general is amazing. But they have been working on an aggressive defense and pressing in both defense and offense the last few weeks.

Lithuania did three friendly games so far, and judging by what they displayed, they mean business. First they beat Latvia by 19 points, and then won two games against Georgia. The first one by 31 point, and the second one by 27. What grabs attention at Lithuania is their defense game. They limited Georgia to 51 and 54 points. They might have not been as aggressive in the second one if Pachulia didn't sent their colleague Kalnietis to the hospital. After that foul, the game turned into a war.

- Mentally, we were at the right level, and we defended and fought very well. I'm not happy with the will we displayed in rebound because they recorded quite a few in offense, and that's something we have to fix - coach Kazlauskas said.

They shouldn't experience such problems with Finland because the opponent don't have a very good-quality center line. The only question is, how much time in the game will the Lithuanian coach give his players, and who will have some time off? Janavicius and Jasaitis got a day off due to injuries last time, and Maciulis and Jankunas for tactical reasons. Kalnietis who was involved in that incident against Georgia won't travel to Finland with the team, but that shouldn't be a problem. Vasilikauskas, who did well in the first three friendly games will spend more time on the court.

Besides Kalnietis, Lavrinovic was given some time off, and didn't travel with the team to Finland, just like Janavicius, who is still injured. Lavrinovic was the top scorer in the second game with Georgia with 17 points. Valanciunas is still not on the team, and should join on August 8th.
