FYR Macedonia - Estonia (19:26)

A clash of two of the least efficient teams in this tournament

  • Published:

- Estonia and Switzerland are the opponents we're facing and hope to beat, that's expected of us- said coach Petkovski after losing against Norway in the 3rd round

The exclusive previews are written by our reporters directly from Austria the venue for this EC!

Prior to their arrival to Austria, the Macedonian team pointed out it's a success they've even arrived to Austria, eliminating a handball superpower such as Iceland, although Iceland have not been a force in junior categories for years. In line with those statements, they lost their first three matches in the first stage and fully deserve the position they're in now. However, we must stress and point out that Macedon put up increasing resistance from match to match.

- I can honestly congratulate my guys for the way they fought, apart from the first match, they gave their best later on. Estonia and Switzerland are the opponents we're facing and hope to beat, that's expected of us- said coach Petkovski after losing 27-23 against Norway in the 3rd round.

Spain routed them, with 20-7 by halftime, -11 in the end. After that, according to Petkovski, they talked to the players and decided to play much more seriously from the very start of the match. They held on to a 4-5 goal lag against France throughout the second half, did the same against Norway as well, and as that happened largely through effort and work on defense, it's no wonder their offense was not much of a threat, and is also to blame they cannot parry strong teams here. Against Norway they had Talevski, currently the greatest hope of Macedonian handball, playing at left back and sporting a great jumper but little else right now, but he failed and stayed at just 2 goals (2/8, 0/5 behind 9m). The rest of their offense is rather thin, and Petkovski has no way to make up for that. Middle back Manaskov is trying his best and getting through defenses with low bounce shots, but that is not enough. The right side of their offense is practically nonexistent, right winger Popovski is terrible, dropping out on defense, missing counterattacks and shooting all over the place. Goalie Ivanovski has big ups and downs... Once dissected like this, it's a success they stayed just 3-4 goals behind against the French and Norwegians. They even held Norway at 16-16 in the second half, but then Popovski missed a counterattack, Manaskov missed a penalty (they scored two of their five), a ball was lost with a poor pass to the pivot and Norway took off to a big lead.

If we analyze the three matches of the qualifying tournament they organized and the first three matches in the first stage, they went over 24 goals on only one occasion, scoring 30 against the Greeks. Here they scored 23, 22 and 23. At the same time one must give them credit for allowing France and Norway only 25 and 27 in the last two rounds. That is their recipe for today, braking the Estonians with such defense, although this is a different game since they're not the underdogs here and they must win at any cost. Macedonians are a proud nation, and so is this team, as one could hear while they loudly sang the national anthem prior to the match against Norway. Today they'll surely leave their hearts on court to leave a good impression, as the following matches are against opponents which they can beat.

Unlike Macedon, Estonia played their best match at the start against Switzerland, where stayed close in the first half, losing 26-20 in the end. However, the next two matches were a disaster, 35-15 against Denmark and even worse 36-20 against Serbia, who had most of the match played by subs, which makes that performance worse than the one against Denmark, who have 16 players on rotation.

- We had a tough group and did not manage to play our game. Despite that, we have a good team, and our goal is to score some good results in the next round- said the leader of the Estonian delegation, Mihkel Jürisson.

In their first two matches against teams that got through the group, Denmark and Serbia, Estonia's best players Celminš (right back) and Lõpp had their worst performances. When they were most needed, Celminš had 1/11 and 1/5, Lõpp 3/9 and 3/5. We should point out that coach Rein Suvi did not want to wear out Lõpp against Serbia, and had him play just 26 minutes, probably already focusing on the next stage and more winnable matches.

Like Macedon, they too have poor offense, never reaching over 20 goals in all three matches (15 against Denmark, 20 vs Serbia and Switzerland). Against Slovenia in the qualifiers they stayed at 14, while they managed to get here by beating Finland 29-23 and Turkey 27-20.

Judging from what we've seen so far, these are not teams that can score over 25 points, and defenses will once again be primary here. Estonia are the least efficient team of the tournament with 55 goals scored, and Macedon is right behind them with 67. Whoever manages less mistakes on offense will get closer to their first victory here.
