Ahead of this EC, Belgium did a good job outplaying Netherlands but today's game will be decided by motivation

This should have been one of crucial games in the last day of the European EC but as it turned out, it will mean very little. When the Russians reached the semifinals, it became clear that the first 6 teams of this competition will be at the U-19 WC in Russia. This means that Netherlands and Belgium have secured their place. Both teams have set this as their primary goal ahead of this EC, so they can be very happy with what they've accomplished.

Netherlands have made only one bad move on this tournament, and it was losing against Croatia after going up by 19 points. The rest of their defeats came against stronger teams. Yesterday, they got back at the Italians for their defeat in the second round. The Italians got a 10-0 run in the first period and take the lead by 19-9, but the Netherlands woke up in the second period and get back in the game.

The start of the second half was dominated by the Dutch players. They immediately get a 14-0 run that puts them up by +11 points, and they maintained their lead until the start of the last period. The Italians didn't give up and got a 7-0 run to make it 54-55 with 1 minute and 18 seconds to go, but the were unable to score another point as they missed their last 4 shots.

The Dutch centers Ndiba and Hof played a crucial part as they got 21 points and 21 rebounds between themselves. Netherlands outjumped the Italians by 44-34, which nullified their high number of turnovers.

Today they will face a very difficult neighboring derby against Belgium, a team that beat them by 20 points ahead of this tournament (56-76). Belgium have so far gotten 4 wins but they still haven't been able to beat a team on the same level as Netherlands and that will be their biggest challenge.

Yesterday's game against Croatia was a completely one-way game, with the exception of first period. In the second period, Croatia got only 4 points and fail to score for almost 8 minutes. Belgium got a +9 lead by half time and Croatia fell apart in the second half. Belgium won the third period by 29-9 and get a 26-point lead, while Croatia scored only 6 points in the last round to round-up their disastrous performance.

Belgium's attack is not impressive. They score sightly more than 51 points per game, but their defense is on a par with French defense. (50.3 points. They limited Croatia to 26 points and 17.6% field goal with no assists. The main question is whether Belgium's intensity will be at the top level as they have already fulfilled their goal.
