AZ Alkmaar - PSV (2:4)

AZ a great threat for the leading PSV

  • Published:

AZ have been doing great since the championship resumed, which saw them advance to the 4th place and might see them become a tricky rival for the top table PSV, who are on a 9-game winning run in the league

Last week's 4-2 win over Groningen confirmed AZ to be in excellent form and saw them take spot four in the table with the same number of points as Feyenoord in spot 3. We need to point out that Groningen took a 2-0 lead and AZ managed to make a comeback by scoring 4 goals to a team that was undefeated home this season.

AZ couldn't have hoped for anything better ahead of their clash with the leader from Eindhoven that will be the final test for AZ potential. They hope to qualify for Champions League but the competition is fierce.

- If it were up to me, we would always play like in that second half in Groningen. That was perfect but we also know that we are still not the team capable of dominating for 90 minutes, even though I think we're getting there - coach John van den Brom said. He was forced to do that last match without center back Aron Johannsson, midfielders Ortiz and Elm. Only Johannsson will be back today but probably won't start.

- PSV are beyond any doubt the best Dutch team at the moment. Their squad is young but managed to make progress very quickly and always rely on their own strength. I was particularly impressed by their performance in Breda after they lost a player one minute into the game and dominated the rest of it with only 10 players - Van den Brom said, warning about opponents' power, which should will probably result in a bit more defense-oriented approach with his side that normally uses fast and deadly transition anyway, which saw them win more points away than home.

- We need to be organized and not attack individually and without a plan. But then again, we can't adjust to PSV completely. We can expect a positive result only if we play our game - Van den Brom said. AZ beat PSV in two home games over the past three seasons.

AZ managed to grab 13 points since the season resumed but that was enough only for the second best record seeing as their rivals PSV took 15. They are also on a 9-game winning run and remain undefeated home.

It has become clear that Ajax's four year reign in Dutch top division is about to end and the visit to Alkmaar might as well be the toughest challenge PSV could be faced with at this point, given the form and the ambition of the home team.

- AZ are in fine form and will be very motivated in this game. Home team have good result and the quality for Eredivisie top spots. We won't have it easy there - PSV's coach Cocu said. His team has an Europa League match with Zenit next week.

- It's good that we're playing Friday so that we have enough time to rest ahead of Zenit. Even if it wasn't like that, we would still have to do our very best to finish the Alkmaar game the way we want to - Cocu said. PSV will have to be without the four players who have been out for a and maybe without Mexican midfielder Guardado who is questionable.
