Spain - FYR Macedonia (33:22)

Spain the top favorites, Macedonia with a very thin squad

  • Published:

Talevski is the main hero in Macedonia's ranks and this '94/95 generation hasn't reached any major competitions, which makes this their debut. They will have to look for a sensation against Spain to win

The exclusive previews are written by our reporters directly from Austria, the venue for this EC!

Spain are coming to Austria as the second favorites and their coach Martinez believes the Danes are the top contenders (Danes are the reigning world champions in this generation), while he puts Spain into the second row with Germany and Sweden.

At the WC in Hungary last year, they past the first group with Croatia (29-28), Brazil (24-25), France (31-25), Angola(38-21) and Argentina (34-27). They beat the hosts by 25-23 in the Round of 16 and eliminated Serbia with a lucky goal (21-20). They didn't have a chance against Denmark (23-32) and Germany in the battle for the bronze (23-29).

It's interesting to note that this generation got the fourth place the year before but at the EC in Austria. They took the second place in a group with Croatia (35-40), Romania(40-37) and Switzerland (34-32). In the second stage, they beat Slovenia  (39-37) and Denmark (34-27), and then lost against Germany in the semi-finals (37-42) and Denmark in the battle for the bronze (32-37). You may notice some strange results and lots of 80-goal games, which was a result of coach Francho's experiments with a wild 1-5 defense. He was sacked upon his return to Spain and their team in Hungary last year was led by Isidor Martinez who got back to 6-0 defense and things looked much calmer. Martinez is still their coach.

In comparison to their games last week, they have made some changes in the roster and it's interesting to note that first-choice middle-back Jon Saiz Azkue (top scorer last year with 37/56) will be paired with Marco Cañellas Reixach, the brother of Joan from Kiel. Ignacio Plaza is still the biggest name in this team, and we also have left-back Arnau Garcia (Granollers), right-back Mario Lopez Alvarez (Ademar), pivots Pineiro and Rey Morales, keeper Biosca Garcia...The biggest change has been made on the wings where they are without Gerard Carmona on the right and Guillen Lozano on the left.

Apart from Plaza, one of their main men is definitely left-back Arnau Garcia who will soon start his third season in the Asobal League and last year, he scored a last-gasp goal for Granollers against a then-great team Atletico Madrid. Interestingly enough, his father (keeper) won the Champions League with Teko in 1994.

- Our group is very difficult. We don't know Macedonia very well, we don't have much information or video materials and we haven't played against them so far. France and Norway are the teams that will be the most difficult to play against - said Garcia.

- We took the fourth place at the WC and EC and even though we're under no pressure, we would really like to take the medals this time.

Martinez wasn't too happy with their most recent performances on a tournament in Leon:

- We have to play better, we weren't constant enough as these guys lack team work. We only had 18 training sessions. But even though we didn't play well, we won three games.

FRIENDLIES: Qatar 20-19, Portugal 24-22, Hungary 29-27, Germany 22-24, France 32-29, Switzerland 27-23.

This Macedonian generation has never reached the big stage. They didn't reach the EC two years ago due to their three defeats in the qualifiers against Belarus (28-20), Russia (30-16) and France (34-18), but this year has been a different story. They are led by their great talent Filip Talevski (still eligible for cadets) and they topped their qualification group which included Greece (30-22), Italy (24-22) and Iceland (21-15), whom they beat in the last crucial game. The match was played in Macedonia in front of 2,000 fans. Talevski scored 11 out of 21 goals, with a total of 27 goals in 3 games. He even played for his club against Kiel in the CL quarter-finals; he got in in the last 15 minutes and scored 3 goals.

- Our team has many talented players and I can say we have a good generation. Luck wasn't on our side in terms of draw as we have to play against France, Spain and Norway. We have already played against France and we lost by 15 goals, but I believe that we have a chance in Austria if we put in a good performance - said Talevski.

- We have a 50-50 chance against Norway, and a point from any of the other two games would be a surprise. That's the reality at the moment - said their coach Zoran Petkovski, whose team suffered a heavy defeat against Serbia in the first friendly.

- We used a mixed squad, the opponents played a very rough game and and the refs allowed it - said Petkovski. His team may have left a better impression in the second but they still lost (26-21).

A huge plus for this Macedonia lies in the fact that they have 7 players in Metalurg's junior squad, which played the first league and gave the kids a chance to face Vardar and Metalurg senior team, which was a great experience. The problem is that Talevski is their only talent in back positions, and their only other renowned player is left-back Martin Manaskov (17 goals in 3 qualification games). He and Talevski scored 15 out of 21 goals against Iceland.

FRIENDLIES: Serbia 21-33 and 21-26.

Two years ago, this generation of Spanish players played impossible handball with a 1-5 defense, but since their games usually ended in 80 goals, the coach didn't make it through. Martinez's arrival put the emphasis on defense and they arrived here with certain attacking problems and this domain was not working too well in the friendlies. They won their last one against Qatar by 20-19, and 4 out of 6 friendlies went under 52.5 points. On the other hand, Macedonia has major attacking problems as well, they don't have the necessary depth and they are too reliant on two players (Talevski and Manaskov), while they score 21 goals in both of their friendlies against Serbia. They passed the qualifications with 3 games with under 52.5 and the crucial game against Iceland ended in 21-15. There won't be so few goals today but under 52.5 is still worth taking.
