24.07.2014. 18:00 Finished
Inter Baku - Elfsborg (3:5)

Elfsborg's coach didn't travel to Azerbaijan

  • Published:

The Swedes say they have a chance, but considering the circumstances, they seem to have already gotten over this fixture

Elfsborg were supposed to be the favorites against Inter from Azerbaijan, at least in theory, but the poor form of the Swedish team extended into the European competitions and the Azerbaijanis got a minimal 1-0 win in a very tight game and made a huge step towards the next stage.

Their coach  Kahaber Cakadze was happy with the performance in Sweden but still very cautious ahead of the second leg:

- We're facing a historical success of reaching the second round, which would be a great thing for our club. We played a great game in Boras and we deservedly won, but we shouldn't fool ourselves with this result. Elfsborg are serious opponents and I expect a difficult game at home. The recipe for going through is simple - we just have to play a confident game like we did seven days ago and there won't be any problems.

The Georgian coach announced at the same conference that he would send the same 11 players like in Sweden, which should come as no surprise as the league in Azerbaijan has not started yet.

Elfsborg's form hasn't changed much since last week and the yellow-and-blacks have suffered a new defeat against Nörrkoping and have dropped to the sixth spot. Despite everything, Janne Mian will not wave his white flag upon in Baku:

- There's not point mentioning that Inter have a huge lead now, but we have no intention of giving up without a fight. Inter may be closer to the next round but they will not just waltz their way past us.

Some readers may wonder who Janne Mian is and we were, too, surprised at the time this preview was being written, especially when we saw the information say he is Elfsborg's coach. In a way it's true, as Mian will lead his team from the bench. The fact that they left their main coach Klas Ingesson at home in Sweden shows how much faith they have in getting through in this fixture. Apart from their coach, Jon Jönsson, Liridon Gashi, Victor Rotting and Anton Lans didn't take this trip. Recently recovered Stuhr Ellegaard has joined the expedition to Baku but he's not very likely to play.
