Football » Champions League, Second Qualifying Round
23.07.2014. 20:45 Finished
St. Patricks - Legia Warsaw (0:5)

A defeat would be a disaster for Legia

  • Published:

Legia's season greatly depends on the Champions League, and being knocked out this early in the competition would cause a massive shock at the club. And that outcome isn't even that unlikely - the fierce Irish will do what ever it takes to finish what they started

In the first leg matches of the Champions League second qualifying round, a few of the underdogs have nearly outdone themselves. The Irish champions St. Patricks are one of them. They've had the game of the season in Warsaw and returned home with a sensational draw. They could have even recorded a win that day, having conceded the equalizer in injury time, but they've built the basis for the second leg game far better than anyone could have hoped for.

- Legia had a more offense-oriented approach than we had hoped for in the first game, forcing us to slightly adjust our plans. But, we have a more clear image on their game style and I hope that will help us to prepare the second leg game. What we have to do is limit their possession, which was, a week ago, only getting better as the game advanced, and that allowed them to create a lot of attempts - coach Liam Buckley said. He will be waiting for the news on his forward Quigley's injury till the last possible moment.

Though the notion of the Irish club getting through to the next round sounds pretty unbelievable, they do really believe it could happen. They even did the championship match with Droghead that was supposed to take place this weekend in May, just to be able to focus on the Champions League now entirely.

- We could do we a goalless draw, and that's our advantage today. They have to chase the win, but that doesn't mean we'll play for a goalless draw. If we do our best, I believe we'll be the ones celebrating after the game - Buckley said, hoping that his players won't think about the potential head to head clash with Celtic in the next round.

This is definitely a unique opportunity for the Saints to achieve something great in Europe, given the fact Legia are really out of shape. Their fans were forced to live through yet another horrible performance last Saturday, in the first round of the Polish championship, when their team lost 0-1 home. The fact only three of the players that were in the game against Saint Patricks were in that game might count as extenuating circumstance. Those three were goal keeper Kuciak, and forwards Pinto and Saganowski, while the rest of the team underwent pretty big changes.

As for the possible line up today, forward Kucharczyk is at coach's disposal again, which is good news because Orlando Sa got injured. Being knocked out at this stage would be a total disaster for the Polish team, and the one they would need a lot of time to recover from.

- I wish I could say that we underestimated St. Patricks, but that was not the case. I'm still trying to come up with reasons for such a horrible performance, we were just in some sort of slow motion. On the other hand, they did their best, and the final score came as a logiacl consequence of the two - Legia's coach Berg said, and added:

- As I already said, the only thing I'm interested in is the next round, and that is still definitely within our reach. We can definitely do better, and it would be a great surprise if we don't do it in Ireland. Our attitude is positive, some key players such as Dossa, Vrdojak, Duda, and Kucharczyke are getting better, and with them in the line up, things will be better.

The match tonight will take place at the Shamrock Rovers' stadium, the Saint Patricks' city rival, because it can take more people, and that should automatically mean a louder support for the home team. But, the Polish minority in Ireland is large, and we have to see who was more keen to get the tickets for the match.
