Monfils' potential still questionable

Monteiro almost lost as heavy favorite but he is now the underdog. Last year he beat Tsonga like that and is now to face another Frenchman. Monfils didn't have to run much in the first round and we still don't know what's happening with the leg that has been giving him trouble for months

If it wasn't Roland Garros, Monfil would not be here. Munich was an unsuccessful test after the injury he suffered in America. In Madrid, he was playing so badly that he avoided press and has done the same before Paris. That is why his coach said that ever player goes through crises and that his protege will do his best. 

He beat Brown in straight sets but that wasn't a real test. Each point had less than three rallies on average. The German didn't feel like playing anymore in the third set. Monfils seems healthy enough but he clearly needs more matches.

- I felt good on the court and that's important. Given the problems I've had over the past few weeks, I have to be happy. 

Realistically, we don't know how good Monfils can do here. He wasn't at right level in Munch and Madrid but his first match here was more like a practice session.

Monteiro

He had a favorable draw but still barely pulled through even though his opponent was here on a wildcard and had just one Top 300 win overall (1-16). The young Frenchman with no experience failed to use his chances in the fourth set and everything went downhill for him after that. He just needed more experience for a sensational win.

- I knew nothing about him. I didn't the match to be so tough. My opponent played without pressure and I stayed strong mentally. I had the strength to fight and I got the win in the end - Monteiro said.

Even though he struggled with the underdog, he should play a more relaxed and better match. He is now the underdog and has as such beat Tsonga last year in Rio.
