Tenis » Acapulco (M), Hard court, 1st Round
28.02.2017. 23:10 Finished
Alexandr Dolgopolov - Marin Čilić (3:6 6:4 0:6)

Dolgopolov retired with hip problems last week

  • Published:

Marin allegedly could not finish yesterday's practice session due to foot problems. His next opponent retired from the Busta match in Rio despite winning the first set. Overall, Cilic opened the seasons badly, with a few slips, while Alex won one ATP title and has a win over Nishikori, but on clay court

Cilic

Many agree that Davis Cup defeat to Del Potro affected Marin greatly at the start of this season. The biggest reason for his mostly bad game is unknown. However, he has definitely not been doing his best. He lost to challenger player Kovalik in Chennai, to Evans at AO. Evans was playing his best game back then but still, Cilic should have beaten him. He lost to Brown in Montpellier which was another match he should have won. The only proper tournament for Cilic was Rotterdam. He lost to Tsonga but in two tie-breaks. He should have won the first set, he had set points but ended up losing in two tie-breaks. Still, his game was slightly better than at other tournaments in 2017.

According to those who watched his practice with Nadal yesterday, Marin could not finish it. He seemed to have some foot injury problems which forced him to cut the practice short. If that is true, that is one more reason for him to worry.

Dolgopolov

He definitely has confidence. After failing to win the serve match against Ram in Quito, he won Buenos Aires. He beat Nishikori in the final there, while losing to Carreno-Busta in QFs. He won the second set tie break and retired with hip problems after just one game in the third set. However, he displayed the same kind of problems during the second set but that didn't stop him from serving. It seems like the problem was fatigue too. His match against Busta was very tiring and he has been playing for ten days straight.

He is now to make the transition from clay court to hard court. He is very close to getting back into Top 50 where he really belongs.

Dolgopolov is 4-13 against Top 10 players over the past three seasons but he recorded a win and got the title in last such match (Nishikori).

Both head-to-head matches these two played are from Umag (2011, 2012). Each has one win but neither of those matches mean much today.
