Alexandr Dolgopolov - David Ferrer (6:4 6:4)

Ferrer losing authority

  • Published:

The Ukrainian is coming here after winning an ATP title, while the Spaniard is still going through a problematic period, and his latest shock was last week's defeat to Berlocq

Dolgopolov

He has shown his power of inconsistency in the past two weeks. First at Quito, where he was in the lead by a set and 6-5 in the second when he served for the match, but still managed to gamble it all away and lose to Ram. He is capable of going from greatness to desperation and the other way around, and he proved that in the best way last week in Buenos Aires.

The Ukrainian had a great week, he won an ATP title after defeating Nishikori, and he hasn't lost a single set on his way toward the title.

- If something can be called a top week, then it is this one. I felt great on the court, the fans supported me and I managed to defeat Nishikori for the first time, it is a great feeling - said the Ukrainian.

He has shown what he is capable of, and the biggest question now is can he keep the momentum, since consistency is his biggest problem.

Ferrer

The Spaniard was once feared on tournaments like this one, but he is losing his authority more and more in the recent seasons. He has changed coaches and rackets, but biology does its thing. He has been in the Top 10 for years, finished seasons in that company, and 2016 was the first season after a long time he didn't finish in the elite company. Since he is close to dropping out of the Top 30, the impression is that he will not go back there that easily.

His drop is more than obvious and he proved that last week in Argentina. He used to routinely win the first round matches, but this time he collected games. Berlocq limited him to only 6 games, and Ferrer suffered another difficult defeat he needs to recover from.

The Spaniard is obviously in crisis, and even though he has 9-3 in their head-to-heads, the Ukrainian was better in two out of three of their matches on clay.
