Tenis » Rotterdam (M), Hard court (indoor), 1st Round
15.02.2017. 11:10 Finished
Andrey Kuznetsov - David Goffin (3:6 2:6)

Tsonga and Nishikori struggled with the Russian this season

  • Published:

Goffin played Sofia final but he has no wins from 3 Rotterdam tournament. Kuznetsov's record with Top 15 players this season is poor (1-11) but he often put up a great fight against such players

Goffin

The Belgian reached Sofia final after Australian Open QFs. He beat Bautista Agut and lost a set to Albot there and faced Dimitrov in the final. His Bulgarian opponent is in very good form and has never suited Goffin's game style. It should have been a stress-free win for Dimitrov but he lost three straight games at 5-1 and Goffin came close to getting back in the game. Dimitrov, however, didn't allow that and the better player got the title.

- This was a good week. It was not easy at first as I struggled to find ryhthm but I played good tennis now. This was a great week - the Belgian said.

That final saw him tie his best ranking (No. 11). For a while now, Goffin has been close to Top 10 but he has never done well in Rotterdam. We do need to note that he played rather good opponents as a favorite in the last two seasons (Baghdatis, Muller).

Kuznetsov

The Russian got knocked out in the first round in 3 out of 4 tournaments but he cannot be unhappy with the quality of his game. He managed to get a set against Tsonga and then played Sydney semifinals. He forced Nishikori in 5 sets in Melbourne but he did a bit disappointingly in Sofia. He lost the first game in the first set against Klizan and then lost the second set tie break. He managed to record a win over Klizan in Sydney this season but his opponent retired from that match.

Kuznetsov is around Top 50 but he was always able to show his potential against Top 15 players. He got sets against Tsonga and Nishikori this season. Last season, he was 1-9 (a win over Wawrinka and sets against Nadal and Berdych).

Goffin won both previous head-to-head matches but both are from clay court. The last one was played in 2011, which means it's no longer entirely relevant.
