Tenis » Buenos Aires (M), Clay, 1st Round
15.02.2017. 18:00 Finished
Paolo Lorenzi - Gerald Melzer (3:6 3:6)

Both coming from Quito with a bitter taste

  • Published:

Even though an ATP final is a great thing, Lorenzi had a set and a break lead over Estrella in it and missed a match-point. Melzer lost to Gaio in the second round, even though he had 40-00 while serving for the match

Lorenzi

Lorenzi could have easily gone to Buenos Aires with his second ATP title. He had a 7-6 2-0* lead and another break-point for a double break. Then he had 7-6 4-3 and from that point on, he lost on one serve in the entire tournament. However, there is some magic between Estrella and Quito. The Dominican made a comeback, saved a match-point in the third set tie-break and recorded a win.

- I love playing here and I will definitely be back next season. The fans are great and I felt welcome the entire week. I am grateful. I am leaving here with an ATP final and that is important for me - said Paolo.

But there is no doubt it all left a bitter taste. He was only two serves away from winning the tournament. On the other side, an ATP final is a great boost for the continuation of the South-American clay court tour.

Melzer

The Austrian was in Quito last week as well, and he also must be bitter about his defeat. After he defeated Zeballos in a dramatic first round match, Melzer was close to defeating Gaio and advancing to the quarter-final. The Austrian had 40-00 lead while serving for the match in the third set. Besides that, he also had another match-point but he wasted it all. In the end he lost the tie-break, somewhat expected, demonstrating that the Melzer brothers are capable of losing just about anything.

But Gerald's abilities are obvious. Against players ranked from 21st to 50th position, his record is 2-5 this season, and he often parried stronger players. This season he took Murray into a tie-break. His record against Lorenzi is 2-3, and last year each won one match on clay.
