Victor Estrella Burgos - Thiago Monteiro (2:6 1:6)

Estrella won Quito for the third straight year

  • Published:

Monteiro had a big slip in Quito and lost to Lapentti, while the Dominican confirmed to be doing great in Ecuador

Estrella

Even though he came to Quito with slightly worse results compared to previous seasons, Estrella once again proved that Quito is his tournament. There is a link between them, still not scientifically proven, but there is definitely something since he normally doesn't even makes it to the final rounds at ATP level.

The Dominican struggled and won close matches all week long. The final was no different. He was 6-7 and 0-2 down and saved a break point. He saved a match point in third set tie-break and ended up winning his third Quito trophy.

- Winning three titles here, it's incredible. I will be here next season too, each season until I retire. There is no doubt that this was the toughest final ever for me - he said.

Estrella is bursting with confidence but he is probably very tired and emotionally exhausted. He had to try hard to beat Lorenzi and that is bound to leave a trace.

Monteiro

The Brazilian opened the season brilliantly but that was just the continuation of last season's good games. He got a set against Tsonga and Evans in Melbourne. He was expected to sent Lapentti into well-deserved retirement but Monteiro played a horrible match and lost as a heavy favorite.

The Brazilian had the best season in his carrier and managed to reach Top 100. He didn't have any ATP titles until last season. His 2016 record was 6-7. He is 0-4 this season but he did well in the opening three matches and he lost to better players on hard court. What he did against Lapentti is worrying but he can do much better.

Estrella and Monteiro never met before.
