Fernando Verdasco - Novak Đoković (1:6 6:7 2:6)

Novak: Verdasco should have won in Doha

  • Published:

The Spaniard missed 5 match-points a week ago and has once again reminded everyone of his potential. He has 12 Top 5 wins but he is a player of extremes. He beat Nadal here last year and then lost to Sela

Djokovic

He was dethroned last season but he got back at Murray at the start of the season to win Doha. However, the most important match was the one against Verdsaco. He saved 5 match-points against the Spaniard, 4 of which consecutive:

- Fernando should have won the match, that's obvious. He was the better player in the first two sets and I know what it feels like to lose a match you should have won. Also, I cannot say I did anything special on match points. He missed a few forehands which he normally hits. I was lucky.

Novak took this match seriously. He allegedly asked to practice with Klizan, who is aggressive and left-handed and therefore a very good preparation for the Spaniard.

The defending champion is 85-1 at Grand Slams against players outside of Top 20 since 2011. He got the title at 5 out of the last 6 Australian Opens. Only Wawrinka managed to stop him.

Verdasco

Not even 4 consecutive match-point were enough for him against Djokovic in Doha:

- Losing such a match is tough. It's even tough because I could have beaten someone like Novak. I had 3 match points on my serve but I cannot say that I ruined it all. He fought. I could not get back after that. That is how it goes.

The Spaniard has 12 wins against Top 5 players. He beat Wawrinka on grass court and Nadal here last season. He lost to Djokovic in straight sets here two season ago but the first set finished with a TB.
