Benoit Paire - Fabio Fognini (7:6 4:6 6:3 3:6 6:3)

Even those who aren't fans of tennis would pay a ticket to watch this

  • Published:

Fognini and Paire are known for not being shy showing their emotions. Some find it fun, some not. But this is a typical match where the actors have no script, but improvise as they go

Paire

A player like Paire cannot underestimate a player as good as Haas, even though this one might be 38 years old with a 15 month break behind him. As expected, it was no walk in the park for the French, and who knows what would've happened if the German had more strength and less years. Tommy was even leading with a break in the first set (4-2), but he couldn't keep up with the intensity. He called the physiotherapist a few times, complained about his shoulder, but the truth is he's too old and no amount of practices can make up for that. The tank has dried up - he just had to retire by the end of the second set.

- Playing Haas, the former number two, the triple semifinalist here, that was no gift, but I knew how to maneuver around him. I served very well and I'm happy with how I played. I was good when it mattered. Everything's positive, the lights are green, 2016 is behind me and I've got big plans for 2017 - Paire said. Despite his words, his pick of hits wasn't the best one throughout the match.

Fognini once took a photo of himself with Paire and wrote "crazy and crazier", so that tells you what to expect of this duel. Two pretty peculiar guys.

- This is going to be a big match, but not in the sense of throwing the racquet down. We both think in a similar way and after the average season, we both want to be better - Paire said.

Fognini

The Italian beat Feliciano Lopez surprisingly easy. The Spaniard is a good player, and Fognini never played the Australian Open well. He played for ten years in Melbourne so far, and got only four wins. But, it seems the back problems Feliciano felt in Auckland left a trace. A server like him rarely offers so many break-points like he offered to Fognini (28). Fabio took good advantage of that.

- They told me he had some back issues lately, and he often was careful with his serve today. I'm happy because I was good and focused. Usually, I need some time at the beginning of the season to get things going - Fognini said.

The Italian and the French played each other four times, and each got two wins. Their last duel was won by Fognini at the Olympics in Rio. Let the games begin.
