Even though he had some inconsistencies in all three of his matches at the Australian Open, Thiem is going as predicted. He was down by a set against Struff and Thompson, lost a set to Paire, but quality was key and his wins were not questionable. It was even somehow worse against Paire, because the Frenchman was out of any control and pattern of behavior. That match could have gone to five sets, considering Paire had 4-2 lead in the fourth, but he lost the advantage as quickly as he gained it. 

- I had a good start, obviously. I mean, he was not focused at the start. He actually gave me the set, but then he changed. He played much better and I had no answer to that at that time - said Thiem and added:

- It was tight from the second to fourth set, there were a lot of breaks. It could have easily gone to the fifth set, but I am happy I advanced. 

The Austrian will have his most difficult test now, in the form of David Goffin.

- We are very good friends. We played some important and good matches in the past. I hope this will be another one. We both have good chances for the quarter-final - said Dominic.

The Belgian went through a drama in the first round against youngster Opelka, and then easily ousted two veterans. First he defeated Stepanek and then Karlovic. Just like the Croat said ahead of the match, Goffin runs a lot and has good return, all he needs to put Ivo out of his comfort zone. It was an easy win with 4 breaks in three sets, with giving a single break point. 

- Today's match was almost perfect, considering I played against a player like Ivo who constantly serves bombs. Every time I was on the ball, I managed to return well. My strokes were good, I was good. I am feeling good and I am happy I won in straight sets, and it is not every day you can play a match like this against someone like Ivo - the Belgian was happy. 

Goffin and Thiem know each other well. The Belgian has 5-3 lead in head-to-heads, and interestingly, they were all played from 2014 onward. Last year they faced each other twice, both times on Grand Slams and each recorded one win in four sets.
