Tomas Berdych - Ryan Harrison (6:3 7:6 6:2)

Berdych cautious for a reason

  • Published:

He has just two defeats to players outside Top 50 last season while Harrison has just two Top 10 wins overall, Berdych knows just how dangerous the American can be

Berdych

He spent just an hour on the court as the qualifier he played retired:

- It's never pleasant to win a match like that. I asked him if it was something he carried from the past or if he picked it up during the match. He said it was right on the court.

Berdych has no reason to be sorry about staying on the court for such a short period of time, especially given the heat. Being well-rested will do him well against Harrison:

- He is a very dangerous player. His ranking is unrealistically low. We played in Toronto this season and I know that he likes to play fast and that these conditions suit him. I expect a tough match.

He had a 20-2 record against players outside of Top 50 last season. He lost to Dzumhur and Basilashvili but they were on the verge of Top 100 back then.

Harrison

He beat Mahut rather unexpectedly. Mahut opponent was rather critical of his performance:

- My serves were bad, I did stupid things on forehand. I got insecure and he took advantage of it.

Harrison reached the second round just once in 7 attempts here but he was always faced with a rather unfavorable draw. He is 2-26 against Top 10 players, which is not good but he did win sets against Raonic, Ferrer, Nishikori, Del Potro, Murray and Tsonga.
