Roger Federer - Rafael Nadal (6:4 3:6 6:1 3:6 6:3)

A final for the tennis romantics

  • Published:

Both reached the final after 5 sets, both were very close to lose to hard hitters. This has always been one of the biggest rivalries in tennis but most Nadal is better when it comes to stats. He is 5 years younger and that's good news for him, just like the fact he won all three matches here

Federer

He seemed to be in control as he took a 2-0 lead over Wawrinka but Wawrinka's injury seems to confused him a bit. Stan had his knee bandaged and went all in to end up winning 5 straight games. Federer fell back, let his compatriot take initiative but ended up pulling through. He saved both break-points in the fifth set and saw Wawrinka double fault at the only break point he had.

- It was very tough in the fifth set. Stan controlled the points. I don't even know how many break points I had to save - Federer said. He explained leaving the court late in the 4th set:

- I had my upper leg massaged. It was something that's been bothering me throughout the tournament. I normally don't take those kind of breaks but I had nothing to lose. Something had to be done. Besides, Stan took a break for his knee so I figured he won't mind.

He is now to face Nadal, a player who's been his kryptonite for years:

- I can say that I'm his biggest fans. I have immense respect for him even though he is my toughest opponent. I may have played too many clay court matches with him and those first matches is where the respect was formed. However, I'm very happy we'll meet in the finals. I remember that we were recently at the opening of his Academy. His arm hurt, I wasn't fit and now we're both in a Grand Slam final. I think this is a very special match for both of us.

Nadal

After the Raonic match he concluded that he is happier about playing a good game again than about the win. If there were any doubts in him, they disappeared after the semis. Rarely have we seen Nadal being so happy about a win. Many will agree that Dimitrov exceeded all expectations, played a great game and was close to the win. The Spaniard didn't allow that in the end.

- It was a great match and a great win. I think we both did great today. I need to say that Grigor did great. He could have won too and I would not be unhappy as I gave it my best - Nadal said. He is now to face someone he respects most on Tour despite mostly beating him:

- You all know how I feel about Federer, I've said it many times. And yes, i think it's great that we are playing again in a Grand Slam final. He won a lot of titles and I won a lot. This will be a special match. For both of us.

Rivarly

Nadal is 23-11 in head-to-to matches. He is better at clay court and Hard court. When it comes to finals, he is better as well (14-7). Also, he has won all three of their AO meetings. These two have met 6 times since 2013 and Federer won only once. Just one of those matches is from clay court.

The key to Nadal's dominance is Federer backhand, as Rafa wrote in his biography. He admitted that his tactics were always simple - pushing Federer's backhand, even when sending the ball to the forehand side seemed like a better idea. That created uncertainty in Federer's game. His one-handed back hand struggles with the spin in Nadal's shots.

Conclusion

Dimitrov, also known as 'baby Fed' has done brilliantly in the semis against Nadal and we now need to see whether the original can top that. Dimitrov hit 20 aces and 79 winners and won 75 percent of points on net. He stood up to Nadal is 5 sets both game wise and physically. The question is, does the 35-year-old Federer have power for 5 such sets. He was on the ropes against Wawrinka at one point after letting him take initiative. Doing that here would be deadly. Either way, two written off members of th  big 4 proved they are not done yet. This may be the last chances for them to add another Grand Slam title to their already impressive carriers.
