Angelique Kerber - Coco Vandeweghe (2:6 3:6)

Kerber: I think I caught the rhythm at the tour

  • Published:

The title defender lost the set in the first two rounds, but not against Krystina Pliskova. That match served as a great intro for today's. Vandeweghe is after her second Grand Slam quarter-finals, and so far in the only finished head-to-head they took a set from the German

Kerber

The title defender opened all of the three round with confidence and strength. But after that she lost the set in the first two rounds. She didn't allow that to happen against Krystina Pliskova:

- I felt great from the first point. But in matches like these, in which your opponent serves very well and where you have to make a lot of returns and where there's a lot of footwork, are very difficult.

She had to compare it to last season's tournament:

- Those are two totally different years. I'm heading in one match at a time, and I sense that I've found the rhythm at the tour.

Today she's up against Vandeweghe, a player who took a set from her in the only finished head-to-head in 2014.

- I think the match against Vandweghe will be similar to the one against Pliskova. She's a difficult opponent, she played well and I know she serves well. I have to move, be ready for a lot of returns, but at the same time I have to be aggressive.

The Germans record this and last season against Top 25-40 players is 9-4.

Vandeweghe

The American "closed" all of the three matches in tie-breaks. After two sets against Vinci and Parmentier, she made a comeback from 2-4 in the third set against Bouchard:

- She started playing better in the second set, and I became a little bit passive. But then I thought: what's the worst that could happen? To lose a match? It was key to focus on getting back into my game and to play under my conditions.

Vandweghe never played in the fourth round here, and on her way to her second Grand Slam quarter-finals shes up against the first player of the world and the title defender:

- It's going to be nice to play at the biggest stage against the best player of the world.

The American knows how to handle the best. In her career, her record against Top 10 players is 8-17 in final matches. Aganst Top 4 that record is 1-7, and the win came from beating Radwanska.
