The Spaniard put up a good fight against many Top 20 teams last season

Goffin was not entirely happy with his performance at the start and he almost lost to Verdasco in Monte Carlo. The Spaniard trashed Pospisil and is often dangerous in these kind of matches

He opened the season rather nervously against Haase, with a lot of unforced errors but he was happy later on:

- Starting a tournament is never easy, especially at the start of the season. I struggled with my game in the first set. I made up for the break, fought and won the first set. Things got easier after that. I relaxed but I need more matches to get to my game.

He won the last two matches against the unpredictable Verdasco to tie the head-to-head record to 2-2. Three out of their 5 sets went into a tie break.

He was 4-2 down in the first set and lost just one more game until the end. He finished the second set in half an hour:

- I got more aggressive later on as I realized I need that. I started sending the shots deeper and that combination created problems for my opponent. I felt better with each next game. I forced him to move, dominated in rallies and that is something that doesn't suit him.

He lost in the second round in each of the 4 previous tournaments here. Last season he was 2-12 against Top 20 names. That doesn't sound like much but at least he got a set in 7 defeats. The two wins were over Nadal and Wawrinka.
