Yanina Wickmayer - Camila Giorgi (6:4 1:6 2:6)

Last seaosn's match here in Prague was extended to three sets

  • Published:

Wickmayer made it through to semis here last year, after losing 4 out of 5 matches previously. She beat Giorgi in the first round and the circumstances here suggest we'll see another open match

Wickmayer is one of the players who can generally be happy with her season, even though her 11-10 record might not yet suggest it. However, the Belgian was being faced with a tough draw throughout the season. She recorded only two defeats to players outside of Top 100. One of them was too Davis, the other one to Mitu. But we need to say that Wickmayer was faced with a really tough draw the weekend before that and made a comeback from an almost impossible situation against Krunic, which must have left a trace on her.

It's hard to find that defeat to Mitu a slip. It certainly seems like it because Mito has been doing horribly at WTA level this season but we need to bear in mind that the Belgian was really exhausted after the Fed Cup weekend. She's defending the semis from last season, she won all three matches in three sets and then lost to Pliskova, who went on the win the title, 4-6, 5-7. She beat today's opponent at the opening, which was their only head-to-head match so far.

Giorgi is in a situation similar to her opponent. The Italian is on a 10-10 record and the draw hasn't been favorable for her this season either. She played some really powerful players and we can't really say she had slips anywhere. The greatest slip might be the one from last season when she lost the final qualifying round to Chirico in straight sets. Having reached the main draw as the lucky loser, she lost to Beck. The German played a much smarter game and won deservedly. Giorgi, on the other hand, finished with 42 unforced errors.

The Italian was the heavy favorite in her match against Wickmayer last season. The Belgian had just lost 4 out of 5 matches, while Giorgi played Fed Cup before their meeting. Wickmayer had a 5-2 lead in the third set and allowed the aggressive Giorgi to make a comeback at 5-5 but the Belgian won the last two games. This is an open match today and we can expect a lot of tension on the court again.

Wickmayer played 21 matches this year, 15 of those over this margin. She played a long set in one of the matches, and there's one match with this exact margin. Taking those two into consideration as well (it could've easily gone over), we reach a number of 81% matches over this margin that Wickmayer played this season. Last year, she took all four matches here over this margin (three in three sets, 22 games against Karolina Pliskova in the semis). She doesn't really care about her opponents' styles, and that includes Giorgi today. The Italian played 20 matches this year, and surprisingly, only went over this margin seven times. Her last six matches were all in straight sets, so we'll assume that that run has to end sooner or later. The Italian is the tricky one when it comes to the numbers here, but her style is known. Considering that neither Wickmayer nor Girogi are able to keep their focus throughout the entire match, this seems pretty evened out, like it was when they faced each other last year in the Prague first round. That match went to three sets, but considering the conditions in Prague - cold weather, surprisingly fast balls, we should expect them to go over this margin in straight sets even.
