Fabio Fognini - Aljaž Bedene (7:5 6:3)

Fognini 7-0 against Aljaz

  • Published:

The Italian hasn't won for almost a month but this is clearly a good chance since he clearly knows what to do against the Brit. Bedene had a good start to the season which was disrupted by the leg injury in Auckland

It's no secret that clay court gets the best out of the Italian. But Fognini is often so destructive that he needs no help from the opponent in order to lose. It's almost impossible to say what his next performance will be like but judging by the previous matches, Fognini is in a bit of a crisis.

He opened the season with an ATP quarterfinal (Auckland). After that ge recorded two defeats to make it clear that this season will be no different than the previous ones for him. He first lost the Auckland QF to Tsonga, then lost to Muller in Melbourne and to Delbonis in Buenos Aires last week. Fognini is clearly doing his best when he's the underdog. When things are different, he cannot find consistency.

The greatest of matches show what kind of a player he really is. He clearly could have done much more so far but his best version simply cannot take center stage.

It will be interesting to see how he'll do here following three straight defeats, especially since he beat Bedene in the last 7 matches. This is a perfect chance for him to end the losing run.

- I'm looking forward to playing here. I beat Rafa here for the first time. I hope I'll do well this week - Fognini said.

Bedene opened the season brilliantly with a semifinal in Chennai but then got back to his level. However, the semifinal in India was probably a result of the great draw - Pospisil is not in form, while Vanni and Ramanathan aren't ATP level. The Slovenian with the British passport only took advantage of the situation.

He went on to meet Quarrey in Auckland and had to retire with an injury. An MRA scan later showed there are no consequences, which was a great relief. But, Bedene didn't get a single set against Johnson in Melbourne either.

The leg injury clearly did left come consequences even though extra tests and the Slovenian confirmed he is fully fit. however, his performance didn't give that impression. He didn't play any matches since, which means he's somewhat of a mystery at the moment.

Bedene failed to win any of the 7 matches against Fognini and got managed to get a set in only two clay court matches. The Italian is quite a heavy favorite here again.
