Rafael Nadal - Dominic Thiem (4:6 6:4 6:7)

Nadal won easily in 2014, but...

  • Published:

Rafa won another match in straight sets but he was not completely convincing once again. There seem to still be some stomach ache there. Thiem played his best game of the week against Lajovic and makes the toughest opponent for Nadal in Buenos Aires so far

Nadal went to Buenos Aires to get some confidence. He has much more important tournaments (Indian Wells and Miami) coming up soon, but he clearly doesn't feel too well about his form. So far, he has two straight sets wins in Buenos Aires but cannot really say that they gave him a lot of confidence as he didn't seem to convincing in either of the two games.

He beat Monaco 6-4 6-4 in the first round but that was the least convincing win over the Argentine he ever recorded. There were some ups and downs for Nadal and some stomach ache. He didn't do much better against Lorenzi either. The Italian is not known as someone who can stand up to top players. He built his carrier on wins over weaker players. Still, he forced Nadal in a tie-break but didn't stand a chance in it. Nadal may have deserved to win the first set without the tie-break since he had a 4-1 lead. However, there is that feeling that there is something missing in his game.

- The conditions are extreme and I was having some stomach ache, but I'm happy to be in semis. This tournaemtn is important to me - Rafa said.

He did a bit better in the second set, winning it through double break. Still, it's obvious that Nadal can and has to be doing better. He is generally not as convincing as he was earlier in his carrier but the stomach pain isn't helping either:

- Temperature change combined with humidity affects my stomach but tomorrow I'll have another chance - Nadal said.

He took some medicine for the stomach ache late in the first set. He is now set to face Thiem, after playing Monaco who didn't play for a year after a wrist surgery and Lorenzi, who is not his level. The Austrian, however, is Top 20, clay court specialist and definitely the toughest challenge for Nadal in Buenos Aires so far.

- He's been doing really really well. He won a few tournaments at this surface last season. He's a young player with a great potential and I hope I'll be ready for him - the No.1 seed said.

Thiem hasn't exactly sailed through his previous matches here. He lost a set to Carreno-Busta and then saved a match point against Elias. Things did seem much better in his next match (Lajovic). Thiem won the first set easily, without allowing the opponent a single break point. His opponent had the only break points in the second match when Thiem was 4-1. The win was never questionable. The Austrian finished the QFs match with a total of three converted break points and without dropping a single service game.

- It was a rather good performance on my part. My game was good than in the previous round. I managed to control things and this performance was much better than the previous ones here. It was tough to play Lajovic because we're double's partners and we know each other so well. I'm excited to be in the semis. I now have to play my top game - Thiem said.

He played Nadal once - two seasons ago at Roland Garros. Tiem won 7 games in three sets and didn't put up a great fight. However, Nadal has clearly been struggling over the past year. He proved that once again here. Thiem won three ATP titles on clay court in the meantime and is now a much better player. Rafa is the favorite as he always is on clay court at tournaments like this one, but he is not crushing the opponents as he used to.
