Kei Nishikori - Taylor Harry Fritz (6:4 6:4)

Nishikori: I practiced with Fritz and I know what I'm up against

  • Published:

The American lost the serve three times in the first set, then he found his game later, but Berankis helped a lot in the end. ishikori lost the first set, and then with a single offered break-point he won in the following two. He is one step away from his fourth Memphis title in a row

No one will probably beat Chang who played his first ATP finals at the age of 17, but Fritz, with 18 years and three months, came very close. The young American showed feistiness and cold-bloodlessness at the right time, while Berankis once more proved he doesn't know how to use his own chances. He definitely had one here.

Even though Fritz recorded 17 aces and won 71% of points at the first serve, he lost the serve five times. Out of that, three times in the first set. It was a nervous start of the match, as was expected, but later he justified the title of America's big rising star. He took the lead 3-1 in the third set, and then lost the advantage. Berankis then donated a new break with a couple of errors and the home player reached the winning serve. He missed four match-points, then saved two break-points and in the end won.

- Berankis seemed invincible in the first set. Because of his game, mine seemed desperate. He killed me on returns. In the second set I raised the speed of the serve. I didn't have any other options. I started holding the serve and then I was able to relax more at the return - Fritz commented on his first ATP semi-finals, and then he again thanked the audience:

- It's an incredible feeling when the crowd supports you like that. I owe them a lot because they lifted me up when I stumbled down.

And Nishikori didn't need to be lifted up. He's after his fourth title in a row here and that's enough, confidence-wise. Even though he lost a set for the first time this week, later he was invincible. Only one offered break-point. Last year Querrey almost won here. This time he took a lead in sets, but didn't even come close to winning.

In the preview of tha match, the Japanese said that the conditions suit him more than Querrey. He was right. It's harder to score a winner here, to end a point. Even though the American saved eight out of 11 break-points, in the third set the Japanese did an early break, and ended the match with a new one. He saved five out of six break-points.

- It was a tough start of the match. Sam played really well in the first set, he served great. His points were deep, so I had to defend myself the whole time. In the second set I found the rhythm, the game worked through, and the tactics did too. I was more aggressive and I was pleased with that - commented the Japanese, and it seems he knows the 18-year-old he's up against in the final as well:

- We often practice in California. I know he has a great serve and he reminds me of Sam a bit. All his hits are strong. You can see he's full of confidence, he has nothing to lose and I have to be careful.

This is Fritz's first, and Kei's 16th ATP finals in their careers. Kei won 10 times and here he's after his fourth title in a row. In those finals he beat Karlovic, Lopez and Anderson, all top players. This time he's up against a young opponent with no experience. The question is how much can Fritz do. He pulled through in the last two matches, and he can hardly count on that now against the first seed.
