Martin Klizan - Gael Monfils (6:7 6:3 6:1)

Klizan has a new huge turnover, while Monfils beat his old

  • Published:

The Slovak passed Mahut with an almost identical scenario like against Bautista. He again saved the opponent's match serve, this time and three match-points. There's no doubt that he's very confident, but the impression is that he's now up for the tough job. Still, he can build his optimism on the fact that he won all three finals so far, while Monfils won only five out of 17

After a very weak start and a three-game losing run at the Australian tour, Klizan went indoors last week. He applied for Sofia and he immediately improved his image. In the end he reached semi-finals in which Troicki won in a tight match. After the defeat, Klizan didn't hide his disappointment, even though he achieved good results.

Martin obviously believed he can and has to do better in these conditions, and we had a chance to see him do it in the following week. He started out fiercely, beating Robredo and Bghdatis without much trouble, and then he achieved two incredible wins thanks to amazing turnovers.

First he saved five match-points in the quarter-finals against Bautista, and one of those was during the Spaniard's winning serve. He did almost the same thing against Mahut in yesterday's semi-finals, but he saved three match-points against him.

After he lost the tie-break of the first set again, Klizan fell psychologically and the experienced French used that. He did an early break which he held until the match serve before which he already missed one match-point. The Slovak played that game perfectly, and he slowly got into a good momentum. They went into a new tie-break in which the Slovak had the advantage, but the french returned with four points in a row and took the lead with 6-4.

He had one match-point at the serve, but he couldn't help it. Klizan's forehand gave him additional confidence. He won three out of the upcoming four points, and then took the third set without much trouble. Because of the missed opportunity Mahut was nervous, while Klizan enjoyed every move.

- It's an amazing thing how I managed to turn this match around. Mahut was better until the end of the second set, but I fought and somehow found a way to win. I'm very happy because of it and I can't wait to play at my first big final of the 500 Category - said the Slovak after a big celebration. So far in all three ATP finals he won.

That's an impressive number which shows how far one can go with confidence Still, today he's not the favorite, and there are a couple of reasons for that. Monfils has an excellent tournament behind him in which he probably spent himself less. Up to this finals he let go a single set (Coric), and he raised his game level from one round to the other.

The awkward quarter-finals against the excellent Zverev was done without much trouble, and yesterday he played the best match ever. Against Kohlschreiber, who usually beat him (11 times), he was great. The aggressive approach he mentioned before the match apparently worked, and the German also helped with his bad server day (49% of the first one recorded).

- Today I played a really good match. It was tight at the beginning, but then I started feeling better. Later everything went into the right direction and it was simply one of those days when you're lucky - said Monfils after a convincing semi-finals win, and then he announced the final opponent:

- Martin is known for his aggressiveness. It's very hard to play against someone who loves their game; they'll always head after their shot, despite the results. He's obviously doing well here and I'm up for a tough task.

Monfils's final score is nowhere near as good as Klizan's, but he has some other numbers. He has more experience from tougher meetings and tournaments as for finals. This is going to be his 23rd finals in which he will go after his sixth win. He's the favorite today, but he should be careful. Since they're both very temperament but have different styles, the final should prove to be very interesting.
