Carina Witthoeft - Garbine Muguruza (2:6 4:6)

Muguruza fired her coach

  • Published:

The Spaniard did horribly in both of her matches in the States to record bad defeats. She lost both of first round matches at US Open so far. The circumstances are clearly not ideal for her ahead of this season's US Open

Carina Witthoef has been doing her best this season and has accordingly never been better ranked. She finally made it into Top 50 and doesn't have that to chase anymore, which definitely lifted some pressure off of her chest. Also, she crashed out of qualifying rounds in both of her US Open tournaments so far, meaning that even one win this season could see her ranking improve. But, Witthoef is faced with a truly tough challenge in the very first round.

The German prefers clay court as her footwork is better on it, the way the ball bounces suits her better and she has more chances of recovering if something goes wrong. Surprisingly, she displayed great performances on the American hard court. She did great in Toronto, having reached round of 16 from the qualifying rounds, lost to Duque-Marino in Cincinnati and did badly in New Haven where she lost to Govortseva in a qualifying round. It seems like Witthoef is too dependent on her serve and that easily loses confidence if her first serve doesn't turn out the way she wanted.

On the other hand, things aren't exactly going great for her opponent Mugurza either. After a great Wimbledon, where she reached semifinals, Garbine made a big decision. It all started with two defeats in the US, which forced her to sack her coach only a few hours before the US Open. Conchita Martinez will be her coach in New York but who knows how that collaboration will work. It is not really usual for a player to sack her coach after recording the best result in her carrier, especially not just before a Grand Slam. but things have clearly gotten bad after Wimbledon. She first played inexplicably badly in Toronto against Tsuernko to go on an lose to Shvedova in the very next match. Mugurza did disappointingly in both of those matches, recording only 60 of first serve points, while making to many mistakes, which allowed both opponents to outplay her.
