Thanasi Kokkinakis - Richard Gasquet (6:4 1:6 6:4 3:6 0:2) forf.

Kokkinakis put up a good fight against Gasquet in Cincinnati in one set

  • Published:

Two weeks ago in Cincinnati Kokkinakis should have taken the first set from Gasquet, but after a missed tie-break, later he sank. He said that he had left recent events behind him

The fire started by Nick Kyrgios reached three people. These days the 20-year-old Australian admitted that he should have gotten a heavier punishment, but he can't turn back time and the Australian definitely gained a lot of new enemies. Even Rafael Nadal declined to play exhibition doubles with him.

But that's not why his fellow Australian and friend Thanasi Kokkinakis declined him. A year younger Australian is one of the three people mentioned who have been indirectly made part of that story, but if we ask Kokkinakis, he claims they had dealt with everything in the locker room, and the two of them will also play in the doubles competition. Two years ago they've won the junior Wimbledon.

- Of course he shouldn't have done that. But we're good, we talked and he apologized. That's now behind us, we have to go forward - said Kokkinakis.

That obviously strongly influenced Kokkinakis, so he showed his rash temper in the Cincinnati qualifications. He almost physically dealt with Harrison, and the press immediately flashed titles how the 19-year-old Australian wants to be a partner in crime for Kyrgios. He denies everything:

- I didn't do anything what would make me a bad boy. To be honest, it's funny to read all the press titles. I'm trying not to pay attention to that.

He played two good matches in Winston-Salem, especially on his serve. In two matches and a total of five sets he played the maximum number of games. He scored a total of 42 aces to Dolgopolov and Gabashvili +, and he lost the serve only once, against Dolgopolov. In the end he ran short in a tie-break of the defining set against Gabashvili, and he didn't use a single out of eight break-points.

In the Flushing Meadows derby (last year he got knocked out in the second qualification round), the draw paired him up with the 12th seed, Richard Gasquet, with whom he played against less than two weeks ago in Cincinnati. At the time Kokkinakis was heading up the right track in the first set, he had 5-3 in the tie-break, and then he lost four points in a row, and soon the match itself. A classical breakdown.

Gasquet reached the quarter-finals on that tournament. After missing Montreal where he got ill, that was surely a positive result he didn't expect. Being convincing against Kyrgios, and also the lucky, but the deserved beating of Cilic who didn't use numerous chances, in the end he lost to Murray against whom he won the first set, but by the end he had no other chances.

- I didn't play bad, but I was physically exhausted and I wasn't at my highest level. I didn't expect to reach the first quarter-finals here - added Gasquet.

Two weeks before US Open are enough for the French to bring that segment up to the right level. Two years ago on these courts he played the semi-finals, but from the current perspective that seems unreachable for Gasquet. At the very start he's up for a challenge. Kokkinakis's serve is excellent, he likes a big stage, and as a rule he plays very good tennis and doesn't have problems with big names or marathons. In case he holds onto Gasquet's forehand (his weak spot) in his aggressive game plan, he will definitely stand a chance.

The numbers are clear. I expect Kokkinakis to take at least one set and make up for the slip he had in Cincinnati when in the tie-break of the first set he had 5-3, and then he sank. Now this is a different story, three sets and in case if he falls behind after the first set, he shouldn't lose his head over it. Especially with his edition in Winston-Salem where in five played sets he only once lost his serve. In two matches he scored 42 aces and played the maximum number of games. Gasquet reached the quarter-finals in Cincinnati which, as he said himself, he didn't expect, but he wasn't fully satisfied. He didn't leave a special impression on me either and I don't expect him to waltz through to the second round here. If Kokkinakis holds his level of serve which he showed in Winston-Salem, he will definitely stand a chance, since he will have them on Gasquet's serve. The equally good option is the total game over.
