Robin Haase - Dustin Brown (4:6 4:6 6:3 7:5 6:4)

Brown spent more time playing Budesliga than preparing for US Open

  • Published:

The German has not returned to the States after Newport. He played Budesliga for two weekends and another challenger in Germany. Haase played Winston-Salem. He recorded three wins in the US back in the spring

The tennis enthusiasts didn't need Brown to beat Nadal in Wimbledon second round to know who he is. He turned to spotlight onto himself after that win, just like Rosol and Darcis before him. Brown later admitted to gaining 40 thousand followers on social media and getting 500 text messages after that win.

Brown is a German of Jamaican descend. After the win over Nadal, everyone got interested in him so we learned that the tattoo he has is not Bob Marley but his father Leroy, who bought him a van in which he lived for years, using it for travelling to challengers and futures tournaments. Also, we learned that he didn't cut him dreadlocks in 19 years.

Brown hasn't done the grass court season prior to Wimbledon well. He played Newport quarterfinals and then took a rather strange turn. He first spent the weekend playing Bundesliga and then went to play Segovia and crashed out of the second round to Smith, who is not even in Top 200. He went back to Bundesliga since the money you can get there is clearly tempting.

- Everyone likes to play Bundesliga but at the end of the day, it's a job that earns you money. Everyone needs to have a way of financing themselves - Brown said.

His Bundesliga value probably got bigger after Wimbledon and aside the easy money, good thing about Budesliga is that you cannot get fined for the lack of effort, which is what Brown seems to be having at times. He has done the same thing over the past few years but his year he didn't have to play US Open qualifiers.

He was in Winston-Salem last season but this season, the last tournament before this final Grand Slam he did was a challenger in Meerbusch, where he crashed out early on once again. That is the typical Brown. When lacking in motivation, he can lose to almost anyone.

Robin Haase, on the other hand, has a very clear plan when it comes to US Open. He mostly goes there to pick up the check. He played only Winston-Salem so far, before which he tried and take advantage of the clay court season as much as he could but hasn't really succeeded in that (he has only ATP QFs and one challenger title). To sum up, Haase is not playing good tennis this season and the results he's recording are no better than that.

The Dutchman has a single win from New York, the one from four years ago. He's never doing great here but neither is Brown. He has only one US Open win as well. Brown has only two wins from Doha on hard court from early in the season, while Haase recorded three of him in the States (Miami and Indian Wells).

Given the results and form, the second round would most likely satisfy both opponents but who ever loses will not be too disappointed since the money prize for the first round isn't bad either. Brown is especially happy just to be here since his preparation for the final Grand Slam was virtually non-existent and we don't really know what he is capable of.
