Nick Kyrgios - Andy Murray (5:7 3:6 6:4 1:6)

A first round 'treat' in every sense of the word

  • Published:

Kyrgios is currently being written and talked about more than any other tennis player but not because of his game. It seems to have taken a toll to everything despite the fact Kyrgios claims to be playing good tennis. Either way, he is now faced with the trickiest possible draw in US Open first round since Murray is in great form. He beat Kyrgios in straight sets in each of their three head-to-head matches. Interestingly, two of those from this season are from Grand Slams

Murray is, as expected, one of the greatest contenders for the US Open title again this season. He has had a great season during which he made additional progress to show that he is one of the top player when it comes to clay court as well. Other than the two slips early in the season (Coric, Simon) and the more recent defeat to Gabashvili, Murray loses only to the top players or wins the tournaments he participates in. He won 4 titles this season - Queens, his first ever clay curt titles in Munich and two of the Master Series tournaments.

The cooperation with Mauresmo seems to be bearing fruit even though she is currently on a maternity leave. But, Murray is still doing great, having had a great grass court season, after which he finished the Davis Cup weekend with a win and went across the pond to continue his successful season. The Davis Cup win over France surely gave him an extra boost in confidence and motivation, which is why his game stayed at a very high level.

He has, however, had the aforementioned slip against Gabashvili at the very start of the American tour in Washington but things have been going great since. He recorded a great win over Djokovic, who beat him 8 previous times, to win Montreal, while reaching Cincinnati semifinals in spite of fatigue. Federer was simply too good in tat match but Murray has overall had a successful preparation for the final Grand Slam of the season.

- I used to come here with poorer results and have played well. This time, my season has been very good. I have more wins now than in some previous seasons. I feel great and look forward to playing this tournament - Murray said for the Scottish BBC and turned to his first obstacle at this season's US Open:

- It's a tough match for the fist round but I have had matches like that this season already. Nick likes these conditions and the big scene, which makes him a tricky opponent. But I believe in my tennis and I have to beat all the opponents if I want to win the title.

There is no doubt about it, the Murray-Kyrgios match is definitely the first round derby match and one of the most intriguing clashes that this US Open could offer. The young Australian is currently the most talked about tennis player, but sadly (or luckily) for him, the things that are being said are not very positive. He draw attention onto himself by tanking in the Gasquet match but all of that was nothing compared to what he told Wawrinka in Montreal. He was apologized for it on multiple occasions but it feels like he's been doing that just because he was forced to.

Things not connected with tennis are what got him in the spotlight and have clearly affected his game. Kyrgios is currently not living up to his talent. After reaching Australian Open quarterfinals, he has had many ups and downs, with his performances being much worse when he started drawing the negative attention at Wimbledon. Hewitt was forced to save the day in Davis Cup following Kyrgios' slip, while Nick recorded only two wins in the States (one after Wawrinka retired).

Everything that happened afterwards seems to have affected Kyrgios' game greatly since he went on to record two bad defeats. Granted, the opponents were better ranked but it will still be interesting to see if Kyrgios learned something (if anything) from what was happening lately. ATP decided to punish him with a 28-day suspension if such an unsportsmanlike conduct is to happen again in the following 6 months.

- I'm thinking positive and I've always felt good here. I played good tennis last year despite losing in the third round. My expectations are high - the Australian said. he lost all three head-to-head matches against Murray in straight sets, two of which were Grand Slam matches.
