Marin Čilić - Evgeny Donskoy (6:2 6:3 7:5)

Cilic: Quality is on my side

  • Published:

The defending champion moved on into the second round after the opening win in straight set and that the most important thing. His game was not too brilliant but it is expected to be improving as the tournament advances. Donskoy is in a good shape. He forced Cilic into the third set last year in Moscow and is now slowly finding that form again

The last time the defending champion didn't open the final Grand Slam of the season was in 2001. Marat Safin had to play at Louis Armstrong back in '01 and this year, Cilic had to do the same. It is not a tradition like in Wimbledon that the defending champion opens the tournament but it has been so more or less.

Cilic is no brand like Federer or Djokovic but he still didn't mind playing at the second biggest court. We can even say that he's used to not being the first choice at tournaments, even now that he has a Grand Slam title. His game in the first round was not brilliant but it was enough for him to deal with the Argentine qualifier Pella in straight sets.

- To win at the start of a Grand Slam in straight sets is always good for confidence - the defending champion said.

That is what is important at the point since Cilic's game wasn't at Top 10 level. There were quite a few mishits on the frame but that is something Cilic often struggles with and it's not that big of a problem. Following a convincing first set in which Cilic lost only three service points, the Croatian No.1 won the second set in tiebreak. The opponent broke him in the third one so Cilic had to try harder to finish the match in straight sets. Cilic didn't have any special rhythm, his aim was a bit off, which he attributed to faster conditions. But, he made a comeback in the 8th game and advanced through in another convincing tiebreak.

- This is my first ever Grand Slam first round in which I'm the defending champion. It's a new but positive experience that did make me a bit more nervous. We had quite a few practice sessions last week to adjust to the conditions. but it was warmer and faster this time so I struggled on return - Cilic said and then talked about the aspects he was happy with:

- I'm happy with my serve, which worked great. Pella's serve was a problem for me. It was not particularity fast but it was tricky.

Cilic fired 13 aces and won 85% of first serve points (46/54), which is very good compared to some other matches. Cilic has done even better in tiebreaks this season. He is currently 19-4 and has won the last 6 tiebreaks.

- I played really well, almost perfectly in the key moments.

Cilic is now to face another qualifier, who is a bit more dangerous opponent in these conditions. It is just what Cilic needs to improve his game a bit more. Evgeny Donskoy has been doing increasingly better this summer. He first reached a challenger final and won one challenger. He then sailed through the qualifying rounds and the first round to prove he is slowly improving.

The win over Pouille is good even though the Frenchman did rather badly in Winston-Salem. Donskoy struggled in the second and fourth sets and even had to save break points in 5th and 7th game of the final set. However, he managed to bring the match to its end when Pouille served to stay in it.

Donskoy can be happy with what he did, both in his service games and in opponent's. He won 82% of first serve points (59/72) while limiting Pouille to only 69%. He also had 18 break points and converted 7.

However, Donskoy will not be able to count on that many break points this time around meaning that he will have to be very rational about those he does get in order to do something against Cilic. Last year in Moscow when Cilic was very close to his performances from New York, the Russian put up a good fight. He had a break in the third set but then stopped. He is not at the same level now either but he is still much better than in the past few months.

- I know him and I know that he can play well. Quality is still on my side. I have to serve like I did today and I believe that will be enough for a win - Cilic said.
